there's a few ways to check pitman arm

A) lift your car (drivers front) and while watching the steering wheel, carefully but firmly try to turn your wheel with your hands. If there's excessive play at the weel while the steering wheel is still, your pitman may be shot.

B) have someone turn the steering while you watch for underneath the car and keep an eye on the pitman to centerlink joint, check for play before it starts moving

C) if you know that your idler arm (that looks about the same as the pitman arm but it's attached to the K frame on the passg side) is fine, and your car acts like a wildcat when hard braking, or you have excessive shimmy, or handling is poor, you may have deffective pitman arm
