Post subject:  lack of valves has me stopped cold

Hello everyone,

MANY thanks re. you responses to my Doug Dutra inquiry! However as life with /6 goes here in NC I am stymied momentarily because it seems oversize valves are UNOBTAINABLE.

I wanted 1.44 Exhaust and 1.70 Intake. My stems are 4.80 (E) and 4.765 (I). Not available at Summit, ARP, Clifford, Eastern or even from some NASCAR pals. I would hate to punt back to stock valves for lack of slightly larger so wonder what valve recommendations y'all may have...I guess I could get some stainless valves and turn them to my spec, or advertise nationally, or ....anyone else run into a total lack of slant six 225 slightly oversize valves? I have 3/8 shafts and can get some 11/32 shafted valves, but then I would have to remanufacture the head for lack of 1/32...someone else has bound to have hit this snag, I hope

Post subject:  Oversize valves

I just recently purchased 383 Chrysler exhaust valves to be used as intake valves. They are 1.74 with the correct 3/8 stem diameter. They are a drop in valve as far as I can see. They are about .080 longer than the slant 6 valve( if I remember correctly) but this shouldn't cause any problem. I bought 2 sets off a place called Motorville for $2 each. Pretty cheap! I put them in a big valve head I already had apart and the rocker arm contact point looked fine.

I also bought a set of 289 ford exhaust valves that are about the same lenght as the 383 valves and have a head diameter of 1.451. These however are 11/32 stems. You will need new guides or have yours sleeved down. These were also only $2 each.

There are some completely drop in valves made by someone?? Perhaps Egge? Someone help here? But they are considerably more than what I paid for these. Do a search and you should find them.

I got a set of 1.70/1.44 stainless drop in valves from SI Valves. Had them in 4 working days, even with shipping time from CA to FL. They weren't cheap, I think $12 each. If it weren't for these, I'd have gone with a 289 Ford valve,1.78/1.46 or 307 Chevy,1.72/1.50, both would need the guides changed to 11/32.

Post subject:  Valves obtained Thanks to Forum

Folks,
You all saved me. SI has the valves but didn't really want to sell them to me. They wanted $13.94 each but directed me to call CLifford's first and if Clifford's didn't have them, call back. Clifford's had them, same price, about $160 total. I might have gone with the 11/32 but cost to redo the head was more than the valves. Looks as if we may have to think about having a spare valve set or plan on suing 11/32 as these motors get any older. Rats.
Ironically, in the old radio hobby, we scramble for "valves" too, as the British call vacuum tubes...they have gone from $2 to $45 for certain essential ones the last 10 years. Clifford's did try hard to sell a manifold, cam, and springs to work with the valves...now that would be a pricey valve set!

If you bought them directly fron SI, you would get get them quickly. Mine took 4 working days including shipping from CA to FL.
Clifford will have to get them from SI, then ship them to you. If they treat your order like many others, expect a 2 to 4 week delivery time.
I see they have gone up since I bought mine. I paid a little over $12 each IIRC, that was about a year ago.
