the car runs great under 190, but i notice on these hot los angeles days that when it warms up and reaches about 190, it starts to idle rough and if i hit the gas it just dies... something with the fuel maybe? i got home and opened the hood and put some wood under the tires and set it in drive, the engine idles rough as hell, but in park it's just like a baby any thoughts on this? |

Could well be a faulty HIC valve on your carburetor. The HIC, or Hot Idle Compensator, is located on the driver's side of the carburetor behind a rectangular sheetmetal cover plate approximately 1/2" wide by 1" tall, and has a tapered pintle that covers a vacuum port inside its housing. A bimetallic strip normally forces this pintle against the port so no air is admitted. When the strip gets sufficiently hot, it flexes, pulling the pintle away from the port and admitting extra air. They were fitted to some 1970-up slant-6 carburetors, particularly those used with California emissions. These can over time go out of calibration, admitting too much extra air and upsetting the idle mixture. Even if the HIC is working correctly, if the base idle mixture is on the lean side, the extra air admitted by the HIC can push the mixture over the "too lean" edge—especially with California's oxygenated gasoline. Other things to check include plain old ordinary heat-induced gasoline boiling (fix it This way) and heat-induced failure of the ignition coil—same goes for the electronic control unit if you're running electronic ignition. |
