When I hit the brakes quickly, my 360 Dart, darts to the right :>)). That can actually be kind of scary. Any idea why? It has the late single piston disks with BB Pattern wheels. I know these caliper adapter can get a slot in them that keeps the calipers from floating freely, which might make them hang up, and then run hot. Do you think this might be happening. They look good to the eye. The rotors look good, and the pads seem to have plenty of meat on them. Thanks in advance! |

A bad front end can cause this problem. When was the last time you had a complete front end alignment and checked for worn components? |

Misadjusted rear brakes can also cause sharp pulling to the tighter-adjusted side, and it'll feel for all the world as though the pull is coming from the front end. As Jeb says, check your front end. Take a close look at the strut rods and bushings. |

If the "pull" is trying to spin the steering wheel out of your hands then it is caused by the front end. If the car just pulls without trying to spin the steering wheel out of your hand then it is caused by the rear end. |

I have also had pulls from having an old rubber hose on one side and newer one on the other. Old one was flexing (and finally popped). Lou |

I disagree; I have had "spin the wheel out of your hands" pulls caused by differentially-adjusted or single-side-grabbing rear brakes. I think this is a bit of a marginal diagnostic; pretty much any pull worth noticing will spin the wheel in your hands if you've got the ordinary 24:1 ratio nonpower steering. If you have P/S or one of the faster-ratio nonpower boxes, as it seems to me, the amount of steering wheel spin might well differ between front and rear causes. (Then again, maybe not...I distinctly remember steering-spinning pulls caused by rear brakes when my '62 had 24:1 nonpower, but I think I also remember same when my '65 had P/S and 9-inch drums all around...)

I will look into all that stuff. The front end only has 24K miles on all new stuff, so they should not be too worn. All hoses were new at that time as well. The rear and front grease seals were all new at that time. I will simply have to check it out I guess. The Front end sits up at the correct height. I know that can cause pulling, if one side or the other bottoms out first. The thing is, the stearing is the 16:1 (or there abouts) power steering. This makes it sort of twitchy anyway. When you feel the pull, your initial reaction is almost entirely instinctive to resist the pull, which means you pull back to the left, then when the pulling ceases, you actually push the steering back to the left because you are resisting a pull that suddenly goes away. Since it is a quick ratio box, a little pull equates to alot of movement of the steering components. It is all rather unsettling. My slant car, which has disks on the back too, stops straight as an arrow, and it used to be unpredictable when it had drums in the back Maybe the rears are at least part of the problem. Complicating the comparison with the slant and 360 cars is the fact that I have pin mounted B body calipers on the slant car, which are less prone to hanging up then the sliders, at least in my experience. |
