Post subject:  Vin decoded but can't find any fender tag

hey guys,

need a little help.
i found the VIN tag: passenger side in engine bay above wheel.
only said car type : LP23-Y
Dodge Dart
vin code : LP23A98182259

got that one decoded

Car Line: L = Dodge Dart
Price Class: P = Premium
Make/Model: LP = Dodge Dart GT
Body Type: 23 = Two Door Hardtop
Engine: A = 170 CID, 6 Cylinder (1 bbl Carb)
Model Year: 9 = 1969
Assembly Plant: 8 = unknown
Sequence Number: 182259 = 182259 *

assembly plant 8? as i live in belgium it might be assembled here.
the mirror on the car is from a belgian firm and the correct era.
assembly plant 8 = belgium ??? or just 'export'

the problem is i can't find any fender tag or build sheet
i want to restore the car close to original, so i need paint codes,...

i think i've been reading a post about requesting the build sheet but can't find it. something bout giving Chrysler the vin n° and paying.

thx for helping out.

btw there is a sticker on back window says 3194 cm³ = 194 CID can't figure out why. it should be 170 CID = 2800 cm³

Yeah...the "visible through lower driver's-side corner of windshield" thing is a North American requirement, not always adhered to with export cars.

Almost certainly means the car was not assembled in a Chrysler plant, but was instead shipped abroad as a CKD kit ("Completely Knocked Down", that is a kit of all parts necessary to build the car, except those sourced locally).

There may be no fender tag, again because of CKD build (it would be up to the assembler to affix such a tag, and it sounds as if they might not have). Also seems very doubtful you'd find a build sheet, but the US cars' build sheets were often tucked into the springworks on the underside of the rear seat.

If you don't wind up finding the actual code anywhere, simply have a paint supply place scan some bit of original paint (e.g. underhood, in the trunk, etc.) and mix from there.

Yes, but they can only do cars built through 1968 model year, and only in US plants.

Probably indicative of a vehicle taxation class. Many European countries tax vehicles by engine displacement; perhaps yours was once registered in a country where 3194 cm³ was a taxation class. Or, 3194 cm³ might be the "taxable displacement" (some countries use a mathematical formula that involves engine displacement, vehicle size and/or weight, etc.). Or, somebody could've just entered the wrong number in the car's registration documents!
