Post subject:  No go from the 904

I finally got my 225 running but have hit a major problem. If i shift into R, 1,2, or D i go no where. I had my tranny rebuilt and a new torque conveter was bought with a higher then stock stall. I re-installed both of these my self but nothing happens.

According to the dip stick the fluid is full. I know my shifter linkage is working because in park the car cannot be pushed and in N it will roll.

Any ideas on how to diagnose the problem would be great.

from my little knowledge about trannys I would say the fluid. I was once adding fuild to my tranny and didnt have enough, the gears wouldnt catch, and therefore r,d,2,1 were all neutral!

It is possible the "notches" on the convereter are not engaging the front pump on the trans. When you installed the trans, was there a small gap (3/16 inch) between the converter and the flexplate? It should be necessary to "pull" the converter up to the flexplate.
If there was no gap and/or the converter was pressing on the flexplate, the converter is not engaged to the pump. It will be neccessay to remove the trans, and reseat the converter. It should engage in three distint steps.
How many qts of trans fluid did it take? If not at least 7qts, the pump is not pumping, and the converter engagement needs to be checked.

There was some fluid in the trans when i re-installed it. From that point i have added 4.5 quarts and still nothing. I cannot remember if there was a gap between the converter and the flex plate.

Is it possible to remove a coolant line from the radiator and see if the pump is puming the fluid around?

Yes, but the trans must be in neutral. If the converter is not engaged properly, the more you run the engine, the more damage you will do to the pump. I would remove the converter bolts, and see if the converter will move slightly back and forth. It should not be forced against the flex plate.

I agree with Charlie, If you arn't sure, then there is a good chance that you didn't get it installed right. Sucks, but true. I think I once made the same mistake when installing a motor with the torque converter attached to the flex plate and tried to slip it into the transmission while lowerin the motor in. (I think it was about 10 years ago) How the heck should I have known, it's not like I had ever read a manual yet.

Remove the 4 flex plate bolts and the converter should easily push at least a half inch into the transmission. If it's forced, you'll have to separate the motor and trans again because you'll never get the splines lined up with pressure on the converter. If it's not forced, you can just put the bolts back in. Not a huge deal.

If the converter IS installed correctly, we could move on to:

There are two metal transmission cooler lines that should connect to the bottom of the radiator. Loosening either one should cause a pressurized fluid leak when the car is running. You won't have to look hard to see the leak so maybe just start it in neutral and then shut it down.

If the fluid is pressurized then i can assume the torque converter is intalled correctly, right? I mean the conerter drives the pump so it should be working properly if the fluid is pressurized, right?

I don't know that it's safe to say that as a rule. You have now gone well beyond my experience to ask what an incorrectly assembled transmission would do.

I wish I could be more help. Seems like this part of the forum is a little thin on experts.

I guess you did the pressure test? What happened?

Have you talked to the rebuilder to get an idea of what they think is wrong? They may be able to give offer troubleshooting advice.

I have not done the pressure test. I am just trying to get a plan of attack for the weekend when i actually go home and can work on the car.

The place i went to to have the tranny rebuilt gave me all kinds of trouble so i am trying to stay away from there if possible.

Thankyou though for all the advice thus far.

did you fill the converter before installing? i have heard it takes a while for the converter to fill if not done before installing.
