I was looking over the Dart the other day and decided for the first time to check the steering lubrication. The manual says use 80/90W multi-purpose gear lube. I opened the fill hole and found everthing pretty dry in there except what appeared to be some pretty heavy ....almost wheel bearing grease consistancy lubricaton. I removed all of that from around the fill hole area and filled with gear lube until just above the worm gear as the manual indicates. Now there is a constant puddle of gear lube under the car. I removed the fill cover and found that the lube is just now at the recommended level, so evidently I had overfilled. Still, it seems I may have a bad seal?? |

Hee hee hee - the mystery lube! ...sounds like you need a seal in any case. You can make a concoction of steer gear lube on your stove using chassis grease and gear lube, then pour it in while it's hot and runny. I forget the ratio of grease:oil, anybody else know? D/W |

 How about over sterno in a coffee can out in the garage , on the other hand I havn't taken a beating at the hands of my wife in a while....OK kitchen stove it is  wish me luck

Roughly half and half. Make sure to do it when your spouse won't be home for at least a couple of hours, to give you time to vent the smell out of the kitchen...otherwise you may not survive to care whether the steering box carries on leaking or not.

I'll come over and melt your steering grease, but you have to pay my travel expenses.  How 'bout a hotplate...? DS (who kept an old toaster oven in the garage for years, with which to prebake brake pads and shoes for instant bed-in, heat up crankshaft sprockets for easy installation, etc.) |

I hear dishwashers are great for cleaning nongreasy parts, wheelcovers... About the steering box: If the seal failed for a previous owner, he may have given up on gearlube and substituted grease. Not a great idea, but it may work on very old, primitive steering boxes. Ours need gearlube. |

Actually, they came with the grease from the factory.About the steering box: If the seal failed for a previous owner, he may have given up on gearlube and substituted grease. Not a great idea, but it may work on very old, primitive steering boxes. Ours need gearlube. D/W |

What was the original spec lube from the factory for manual gears? Can't find my manual. Do they just get chassis grease, or is it necessary to brew it up as you described? I've seen various truck boxes that used 400wt., grease for all intents and purposes. |

I just stuck the nozzle of my grease gun in the hole and pumped some in. Lift the front end and turn the wheel lock to lock several times to spread it around. |
