Post subject: | /6 New Yorker project |
Hello all, I just joined up here, so I guess an intro is in order. My name is Dan Vining and I live in central Illinois. I have owned and driven many different Mopars over the years, but my favorites are the big c-bodies. My next project is a 76 New Yorker Brougham 2dr that I bought off e-bay. The guy I bought it from got it from the original owner. After a minor wreck, he pulled the 440/727 out of it (for a Charger). I didn't bother to look for another big block for it. The late 70's engines were terrible in stock form anyway. I was planning on an LA engine but after looking at the performance possibilities (not to mention the dirt cheap initial investment) of the /6 , I thought what the heck. I bought a 75,000mile '75 225 w/904 (out of a Valiant) off e-bay for $56. Here are my plans: -first off, change the gears in the car to 3.50's or so -use a A518 od transmission, if possible (what is required for adapting???) -good low-end torque cam (any ideas?) -Dutra duals -better induction; fuel injection? blower? Not really sure what I will do here. It will probably hinge on cost (like everything else). I usually go the junkyard parts and fabrication route, but I did see a dual Weber set-up with linkage and everything for like $800 that looks nice. This car will be used mostly for routine driving/cruising, but will pull a car trailer once in a while. Any and all ideas or opinions are welcome! Thanks, Dan [img] |

...you are a sick man, therefore I like you! Please supercharge it. I wouldn't bother with the 518, just bolt up a 904, run about a 4.30 gear with a Gear Vendors overdrive. D/W |

The A518 would probably fit without radical floor pan mods. You need an 727/slant six adaptor from a '60s Dodge truck. I found an adaptar in an A100 van for $40. I'd try this first with the 904. Although its a boat, the New Yorker probably doesn't weigh too much more than a D100 pickup with a few bales of hay. Going to the 225 would lighten the C body front suspension quite a bit, it ought to handle better. OT: I have been reading about Mercedes 2.7 five diesels and their new 3.2 CDI V6. These motors could someday be excellent in C bodies. The 3.2 has 370 ft. pounds at 1,600. Not fast off the line, but these diesels can pull a load. In an E-class these diesels can exceed 140 MPH and get more than 40 MPG. |

I thought a 5.9 CTD from a new Dodge truck would be cool til I found out how heavy they are! Someone said 2 1/2 times the weight of a 440! A while back I sold a 60 Plymouth to a guy whose tow vehicle was a 70's Vista Cruiser wagon powered by a Duramax. Awesome car! All black, limo tint, Cragar SS's, 3" pipes w/ Flowmasters. You've gotta love the weird engine swaps. Dan |

It sounds like a great idea to me. Anybody got a link to Al T.'s supercharged/injected slant 6 barge? EDIT: Here it is: http://www.projectplato.com/cars/bigredhome.html |

Yea, i love that car. I've spent a lot of time studying the pictures. So far It looks like the best way to go for the money (especially for a big heavy car). I noticed that one of the aftermarket 4bbl manifolds (don't remember the brand) has the bosses for injectors cast onto the runners, but I love the manifold he modified for Big Red. Dan |

Dan, thats the clifford manifold. I bought one recently from them that not only had the bosses there, but they were already properly drilled for injectors (for the same price, none the less) and a matching fuel rail for $20 more. |

I can guarantee you a Cummins does NOT weigh "2 1/2 times" the weight of a 440. A fully dressed 440 with iron heads and manifolds weighs right around 700 lb. Multiply that by 2.5 and you get... a really STUPID number . Dan The Cummins is heavy, no argument there (I couldn't locate an official weight quickly online, unfortunately). But its more on the order of 800-900 lbs, not 1500-2000 lbs! |

A full dressed cummins weighs in at about 1100lbs. Another big problem would be fitting one under the hood of a car. They are kinda tall. There are alot of OTHER diesels out there that would be a better choice in a car. |

<Yeah, how about an Olds diesel!? > Thats just wrong!!! I had forgotten about those pieces of s***. Makes you wonder if any of those are still on the road, though. Most were pulled and used for boat anchors after about a year. |

That's true, but they're a good basis for an olds gas motor buildup when you find 'em (or so I understand). I know a guy that actually drove one (an "olds 88" or whatever) for 20+ years and racked up a bazillion miles with that crappy diesel!Thats just wrong!!! I had forgotten about those pieces of s***. Makes you wonder if any of those are still on the road, though. Most were pulled and used for boat anchors after about a year. D/W |
