I know there was a light duty and "heavier duty" 904 made.
Question: Is the Heaverir 904 the exact same tranny that was used on 318's and 360's?

Question 2: I have seen 727 behind a /6 in trucks and vans in the salvaged yard. Are these bolt ins for late 60's A and B bodys with /6?

The 727's will bolt in, but you will need to shorten your drive shaft as the 727 is longer than the 904. The 727 in dang near unbreakable, but takes more power than a 904. Also, they may not have the part-throttle down shift the 904's enjoy. I've got a \6 727 that came out of a pick up, but I don't know if I'll ever use it.

So I've been told, but I /distinctly/ remember having to rebuild mine on a truck that supposedly had 70,000 miles on it. The guy before me had one of those campers that fits in the bed, used it to pull trailers, and then for a farm truck. Not that I'm sayin it ain't a good tranny, but yes, they /can/ be broken if abused, and I wouldn't put a used one in w/o atleast tearing it down and inspecting it.

I assume all /6 904 in a turck/van is heavyduty. So i can bolt that in my 68 dart?

I don't know a bout a "heavy duty" 904. If you are referring to the 727, you can easily tell the difference by the pan. The 904 is a rectangle w/ one of the corners cut at a diagonal instead of square, while the 727 has a "dog ear" sticking off one side.

some of the slant 904's only have a 4 disc clutch pak (170 powered) where as the 225 7 v-8's have a 5 disc-- at least that what my 62 manual lists

My trans gets V-8 guts put in it. It only has 4 disc clutches, but it also gets 4 pinion steel planetaries. The Slant trans' get 3 pinion aluminum planetaries.

You can look in most any Slant race car that is an automatic and find a 904. 727 is just not needed. :D

An added note on 727's. They where only installed in slant six cars used for police/taxi/fleet use.

so would a a-904 be OK in my slant-six racing street car? I am rebuilding the 904 to like new but the engine is being rebuilt for 250+ hp. I have heard of people using the 904 for drag racing but I realize it is a lot less HD than the 727. I have both sitting around and the car is gutted right now. I want to be able to romp on it and it is set up for hitting hard corners. What would I need to do to put the 727 where the 904 came out, from bellhousing to the driveshaft? Are slant-six to 727 bellhousings readily available? not to mention shift linkage?

I have always heard that the 727 is overkill in a Slant 6 car, but I always wondered about the real difference in ET among equally prepared transmissions? Anybody ever seen a test of the two? Or actually tried them yourself?

All the racers say the 904 will be about 0.2-0.3 sec quicker than a 727.

The 904 is so cheap and easy to find and will hold up well even behind a stock 318 v8, so your 250 horsepower will take a while to break it. If you then find that you must use a 727, here is my understanding.

You'll find one in a truck, but the bellhousing will be molded to the transmission, so it must be from a slant six powered truck. Not all slant six trucks got a 727, but many did. A 727 from a 318 won't work without an expensive adapter so don't even try.

The driveshaft will need shortened, but there should not be much if any change to the floorboards or crossmember, but I've never actually done a swap. Might be some minor changes to shift linkages and tranny cooler lines, but they are in the same general location.
