| Post subject: | 7 1/4" axle compatability |
I have a 65 Dart-w- a 7 1/4" sure grip. I did a disk conversion and now run 15"wheels. I did a lousy job redrilling the the old rear flange and have another set of axles from a 71 dart that had a 7 1/4" peg leg. Are these axles interchangeable? Also is it worth going to the 10" rear brakes? |

Yes and yes. Redrilling the wheel flanges, though, is unsafe, illegal in some states because it's unsafe, and basically impossible to do precisely. |

Dan, I respectfully disagree. I have redrilled 8 /34 axels and 9 inch front hubs and drums, with no problems. I have a drill fixture, with hardened, bushings, to drill accuratly. I am not an engineer, but feel there is still enough material around the new holes. I do agree, that doing this "freehand" is not a good idea.Also, can you state a law or regulation, that prohibits redrilling? I do know there are regulations in some states, that prohibit "any modification to a motor vehicle as delivered from the manufacturer"? Don't know if it is still on the books, but at one time, in New jersey, you could not even paint a car a different color, by law. PS: was not enforced. |

It's great that you haven't had problems, but when you do have such a problem, it will be a large and sudden one, not a small and gradual one. Quote: I am not an engineer, but feel there is still enough material around the new holes

When Virginia state inspectors pull your wheel off to inspect your brakes (as they do, each year), if they see redrilled hubs or bolt pattern adaptor plates, that's a big flunk.

Im with Charlie here. In 1979 I redrilled a Lincoln 9" rear (w/discs) to Ford/Dodge pattern. At the same time the axle centre was machined to locate Dodge cop car wheels. Once we had one axle done we bolted on a wheel (axle still in the lathe) and checked for runout...not unexpectedly there was less runout than on the unmolested Lincoln axle. The other axle was modified and the whole diff was mounted in my 51 DeSoto Hardtop. Part of the process also involved changing the Lincoln rear from coil spring to leaf spring. In an inspection situation I would just say it was one of a few 51 DeSots equipped with the rare 4 wheel brake option. (Imperials that year had a 4 wheel disc option,,,,show them the FSM). The axle pattern swap has been sucessful for 26 years now. The point is you need a competent person doing any work on your vehicle. Fact is the inspectors I meet do not know their ass from a hole in the ground. Inspectors cant get over the fact the "running lights" on my 65 dont come on with the headlights.....no less figure on redrilled flanges. On a similar note,,,,my sons were stopped in a seatbelt check 2 weeks ago....they had their 4 point harnesses on. The RCMP officer said, "What year is this car?" "1965 sir" " Are these the stock seatbelts?" " No sir" " I could fine you for installing non-factory belts" "Under what section of the Motor Vehicle Act?" "Uh,,,,, Have a nice day boys" |
