Quote: A good rule of thumb is that with the amount of acceleration needed to keep up with traffic when the light turns green on a 45mph road, the 1-2 shift should occur at between 13 and 17 mph, and the 2-3 shift at between 23 and 27 mph. Towards the lower speeds with a 3.23 or 2.93 rear axle ratio, and towards the higher speeds with a 2.76.
That was from a post I found by SlantSixDan.Question #1 - after the upgrade to mpfi the tranny shifts are way off - the 2nd to 3rd shift is at 40mph (904, with 3.23 rear gears and 205/70r14 tires). And when coming to a stop I can feel the downshift... Is this a bad thing, and shouldn't drive it untill fixed? Question #2/3 - I can pull the cable some more to add more tension - so it shifts right (if the shifts are too late, that means the lever needs to be furhter back right?) - but would that be bad to have the lever on the tranny furhter back at idle? |

Sounds like your kickdown linkage is adjusted too long, so the trans thinks the accelerator is pushed down further than it actually is. If the shifts are too late, that means the lever is too far back. It's a little difficult to answer this question clearly as stated. You mention a cable, so I'm guessing you installed some kind of nonfactory kickdown setup (perhaps a Lokar cable?) Factory setups use rods, not cables. I was considering putting such a cable in one of my cars, but the majority of advice I got was along the lines of "I fiddled and fiddled and fiddled with it and couldn't make it work right" (and Pat Blais said "don't"). |

Dan... thanks a ton! No wonder, somehow I got the idea that the furhter back the sooner. Did some more fiddling just now and the shifting is down to a managable level. Rock on. And yes, I do have a lokar cable setup for both throttle and kickdown. In terms of cable vs rod - they do the same exact job, theres no reason one should be better then the other. Its just a matter of getting the throw and accelerator to kickdown ratio correct. |

Agreed. The objections I've heard have not been with the concept of a cable, but rather with the Lokar implementation.

You can check out my implementation of the lokar cables in the slixers gallery, I put a picture there of the manifold assembled. Had to make a ghetto-fabulous bracket, as my friend put it, because the lokar bracket wasn't quite right for this throttle body. |
