I would like to not use my distributor and use fords EDIS. Can I remove the distributor and put a plug it place of it? or dose it need to be there to hold the oil pump in place?

The slant six uses a separate drive gear for the oil pump. Completely removing the distributor is not a problem. Just make a decent block-off plate.

That's what I thought but I didn't have an engine to look at. I see two benefits:
1. accurate timing, and computer controlled advance
2. less load on the oil pump drive, sort of week link on a slant six.

I am putting a megasquirt II on my slant so EDIS from a ford is an option.

Use a lean burn distributor and fire the Megasquirt II directily. No need to mess around with EDIS stuff or for that matter the GM 7/8 pin HEI.

Actually, you may see benefit one, but not two. The slant six has separate oil pump drive and distributor drive gears attached to a common gear on the camshaft. The gear on the camshaft isn't the weak link, and since the stock distributor gear is nylon anyway, the distributor adds very little wear to the camshaft gear.

I'm going to use a Lean Burn distributor myself, but I did give EDIS some thought. The reason I was thinking of using it is that the distributor is tucked so tightly between the engine block, inner fender, and oil filter that it's a real PITA to work on.
