I have what I think is the original locking gas cap for my 65 Barracuda. I quit using it several years ago because the rubber seal doesn't seal anymore. It would leak gas out while cornering. Now that you have to sell your first born in order to finance a tank of gas my wife, who drives the car, is concerned about people stealing her gas. I dug out the old cap and now the rubber seal has turned to stone.

Is there a replacement available for that rubber seal?

If this is the "push on" type of cap that clicks into place when you press it onto the filler neck, then it probably has that odd-shaped rubber part that's not really a washer so much as a thick/tall moulded rubber gasket. In that case, no, there's no replacement rubber available.

Stant G-85, start watchin' eBay!

I figured that was the case, but thought I would ask. It is as you describe. Is the Stant G-85 a locking cap?

Yep, G85 is locking, G27 is non-locking.

I've been thinking about making a gasket for my '64 wagon's non-locking cap, or borrowing one from a newer cap.
Has anybody done this?
What would be a good material to use?
Anyone have a wagon cap they don't need?

If you want to make a new gasket from scratch, I believe you can use neoprene rubber, and Viton would certainly work.

Any idea how thick it should be?
Mine's all desicated and cracked.

I routinely replace the old fibre (or dried-out rubber) gaskets on the non-locking caps with neoprene rubber washers that can be had from a well-stocked hardware store in the perfect size.
