i work with a guy who is very interested in making a alumimnum head for a slant. it would include big valves(1.750 in, 1.45o ex), raised ports to help in airflow, bronze valve guides and hardened seats. heads would be complete with with springs for big cams and aluminum roller rockers. let me know who's interested and i will pass on the word. zedpapa |

I would be interested if: -The effort includes a major modernization of the combustion chamber design. Something very close to the chamber used in the latest Jeep 4.0 or new Chrysler Hemi, for example. -The head were compatible with street use, not a race-only piece. Manifold mounting pattern is probably one of many open questions at this point: Make it compatible with existing slant-6 intake and exhaust manifolds? Or maybe make it compatible with Jeep 4.0 intake and exhaust fittings? |

I am interested, but agree with Dan that a lot of planning would be wise. Raised ports, good chamber design, and street compatibility would be high on my list. How does he propose to do the valve seats? Hardened inserts would have to get close to each other to accomodate those valve sizes in a Slant bore. One way would be to mill the inserts flat where the come together. Does he propose doing a casting, or CNC? Any ideas on cost ballpark? Some talk with Doctor Dodge would be wise since he has thought a lot about this. Mike Jeffrey, Cameron Tilley, The Drakes, and others would also be good sources. Lou |

Make this easyer, ask who is not interested... I don´t care about the aluminum part, as long as it works, I would be happy with a cardboard head I guess aluminum is easyer to make stuff from than iron? Other than that...just listen to the others |

Ditto to Dan and Lou's comments. |

I'll take a modern closed combustion chamber design with raised ports. |

Modern combustion chamber, good ports & valves, designed strong enough not to warp and fall apart ( aluminum heads have taken Detroit a long time to get right. ) Greg |

Wasn't there an aluminum head prototype for the slant way back in '59. I know it's not modern but did any of the prototypes ever make it into the hands of collectors. How about making it with injector bung in the ports of the head. |

Yes, and again in the late '70s.Quote: did any of the prototypes ever make it into the hands of collectors
Yes.

he was hoping to keep cost around $1000. also hoping for enough interest(which i think there is) to make it worth doing. all your comments would be considered. the chamber would definitely be revised, probably to the jeep chamber, but not sure, more research needed here. to accomadate the valves, he was considering moving the valves apart .040"-.060" if it would work. the head would be cast and then finish machined to use stock slant six manifolds. he was also going to get rid of the plug tubes and make it like the later heads. once a design is settled on, look at six months to year for production. keep the thoughts coming. zedpapa |

Before even thinking about moving valves further apart,,,make sure he looks at the size of the bore this head will fit over. |

Quote: the chamber would definitely be revised, probably to the jeep chamber
Difficulty here will be successfully downsizing the Jeep chamber (Jeep 4.0 bore = 3.88", slant = 3.40"). Another good candidate combustion chamber would be the GM Vortec 3500 inline-5 truck engine, but that's a 4-valve head. It would be nice if we had access to some of the A-program prototypes (the OHC and late-'70s aluminum heads, for instance...), but realistically...we don't.Quote: he was considering moving the valves apart .040"-.060" if it would work.
H'mm. Could potentially give rise to challenges in rocker arm, rocker shaft and pushrod geometry. Also could spoil the street-applicability of the head. Think about it: making a mod like this would almost certainly increase the minimum usable bore size to a point where using a stock or near-stock block (or an aluminum block) would be right out of the question.I'm not sure this radical valve movement is necessary. Sure, the stock valves are small, but so's the bore. People make a lot of power with the stock head; they could make a lot more (and get better gas mileage) with nothing more than a modern combustion chamber. Quote: he was also going to get rid of the plug tubes and make it like the later heads.
I really wish he wouldn't! There exist far fewer options in taper-seat spark plugs, and taper-seat plugs can be very problematic with aluminum heads (much easier to pull the plug threads out). I'd vote for a plug-tube style head, either using the stock individual plug tubes or integrally casting them as wells in the head.
