Just go to your local version of Idiot Auto Parts and tell them you want an alternator for an '85 Fifth Avenue.

What's the goal? What're you trying to achieve?

OK, how many watts are you planning?

ok thus far the plan is...
pioneer head unit (50x4)
two pioneer 6x9's (560w/ea)
two subwoofer's (at least 500w/ea, haven't decided on any yet)
two 4.5 to 6.5 fron speakers (yet again haven't decided yet, but at least 250-300w/ea.)
finally a pioneer or alpine amp (at least 4 channels and anywhere from 600-1000w peak)
i won't be hooking the stock speaker up(i want to easily transition back to the stock setup without too much trouble)

i'm thinking this setup will suck some juice...i know your opinions on overkill dan, but i don't wanna have just the minimum power need to run this stuff and charge my battery (in case i add stuff, etc.)
ideas?

An '85 5th Avenue alternator won't get the job done. A Chrysler, Bosch or Nippondenso 50/120 unit will get the job done with plenty of muscle to spare. These came on '89-up vehicles with heavy-duty options. To mount one on a slant-6 requires a bit of bracketry modification, but it's not difficult, and the stock voltage regulator even works. You will need to bypass your ammeter or watch the dashboard go up in flames.

My feelings about overkill are completely eclipsed by my feelings about noise pollution, which is the only purpose of a setup such as you describe. I seriously hope your neighbors are already deaf or are never at home.

NEVER crank music real loud when someone may don´t want to hear it!

And I don´t like to play loud music in town, as everyone will know about my "stuff" and I won´t have my "stuff" for long after that :x

Anyway, I guess the speakers rated watts don´t really count when figuring what alternator to use.
They won´t use more than what the head unit, or amplifiers will give them...

Has anyone tried to give a 500W speaker 500 watts?
Like, measured watts, lab style?

It will be LOUD!

Massive overkill is just about right...

Speaker wattage ratings have a lot of ins and outs to them. Most cheap flea market made for show speakers are rated by peak-peak or pmpo or some other whacky rating instead of RMS.

Your 500 + W 6x9's are likely to be less then 100 rms.

And besides thats just a maximum thermal rating, not a "thats what you have to give it" raiting. Enclosure loading makes a big difference.

Anyway, as Dan says you will be happy with the nippondenso alternator used on late model mopars. Take off about 1/10-1/8" from the back part of the alternator bracket and it'll slip right in with good belt alignment. Only slight hitch - you have to get one from an application with v-belts, or go to the yard and get a v-belt pulley and swap it on. Do a search for nippondenso or nippondenso alternator and you will get some good info.

Translation: You're the centre of the universe, everybody else can fück off and die, because you'll get what you want regardless of the effect on the people around you. We have a little puke like you in our neighbourhood. Drives a VW Golf with a stereo system like you want. Drives it past our house and down the laneway, rattling our walls and shaking stuff off our shelves. 1AM or 1PM, it's all the same to him. I bet he bîtches to his friends about how grownups think he's a punk, too. He reminds me of Beavis, and so do you.

I hope you either grow up and get a clue and a life in a hurry, or go deaf by 30 and live out the rest of your life in impenetrable silence.

If you check the fuse to the amplifier you can easily see how much amps you need from your alternator.
