Yes I did a search and I still have some questions. Is it possible my Comp cam ate up my gear? (Cam Gear still looks good) How has the hardened gear/bronze gear trial worked out? I have 3 good/used OEM pumps (6 bolt truck pump) should I use one of them? Anything else I should look at here? (1 week on rebuilt motor) |

i had the same trouble, when i replaced the oil pump gear with one of dougs harden gears i used a fine stone on a electric die grinder and shaped the leading and trailing edges to look like a stock cam. the oil pump gear now shows a normal wear pattern |

hi, i agree on using/rebuild the older, original pumps,<rebuilt my 68 225 pump,36k... looked perfect> providing they are serviceable vs a new chinese pump with questionable drive gear . but i haven't had a drive gear failure, even using the h.v. m.p/melling pumps on my other slants. ron |

It's possible your Comp cam had a faulty oil pump and distributor drive worm, yes. Doug's mentioned improper drive worms in the past, but I'm not sure what cam brand he was referring to specifically. The machining of this worm gear is obviously supercritical. The distributor drive pinion will tolerate a certain small amount of mismatch, but not the oil pump drive pinion. I'd have an easier time dismissing a bad drive worm as an impossibility if I hadn't seen other random crappiness with Com cams. Improperly-drilled top end oil feed passages, weird "can't make it run right" situations, etc. Not on every Comp cam, just on enough of them to make me want to stay away. (Sandy -- see why I had trouble accepting "Just use the Comp 252 and quit asking pesky questions!" all those months ago...?) |

Brent: That was the pump that came with the cam. Dan: I have had pretty goof luck with Comp Cams....but on SBC stuff..(I have 3 running in fleet vehicles at the moment). I think I will do some checking on Cam/Pump interface while the crank is out......where is the Clover? |

If I really wanted to poke a sharp stick in your direction, I could say something smarmy like "Well, yeah, but it's tough to find a worse cam than a stock SBC item, especially a '76-'80 factory soft insta-wipe item!".But I don't, so I won't. Erm...oops. |

With the exception of a '76 400 with 10.5CR, 041 heads, a carb and a 284XE cam all my sbc are 87 or later 5.7s with later heads(some Vortec) and TBI. I dont use roller cams but I do use high lift split duration Comp cams. The later Chevs with 1 piece rear main seals and different heads and EFI are a very diffeent animal than the earlier motors. I run my work truck with a 262/270 duration cam on regular fuel pulling a 24ft trailer. GVW is just under 20,000lbs. Thats about as much cam as you can run with TBI, 8.5CR and a Allison 800 stall convertor. |

Thats not the oil pump that was on that cam that was just a new pump some one gave me .The pump is here if you want it |

I have a bunch of good used OEM pumps here,,,,I think I am going to lap one of them in with the cam and see how that goes...thanks anyways. |
