Can you run a mopar orange or chrome box with a std ignition that has been upgraded with the petronix points eliminiator? If so, what are the advantages/disadvantages......

Thanks

Mike

Just asking, but why would you need a Petronix on an electronic ignition to start with? :?:

He has points now.

I would say a Pertronix with a good coil will be just as good by itself as running the Mopar boxes.

Buy the Pertronix and their Flamethrower coil and call it done.

Thats what i think im going to do. I have a chrome accel super stock coil which is an upgrade from stock, and i have some really nice 8mm spark plug wires, all i need is the petronix and some new spark plugs and im good. What kind of spark plugs should i get and how much should i gap them....i've heard alot about gapping them to a .45 is that ok?

I use Autolite 985's, gapped at 0.045" in my '64 Valiant.
I am running a Chrysler electronic distributor, 4-pin GM HEI module, Accel Superstock coil, bypassed ballast resistor.

(Edited - I originally thought this would be more difficult than it really is.)

More notes on why you shouldn't try mixing Pertronix and Mopar ignitions.

Yesterday I was horsing around with an original distributor (specifically, a Lean Burn one), a multimeter, and a model railroad power supply (12 volts). I thought these used a Hall effect sensor, but as near as I can tell, it uses a variable reluctor (VR) triggering device. The output from a Mopar electronic distributor bears little resemblance to the square wave you get from points or a Pertronix. Instead, a VR sensor creates an AC signal where the voltage and frequency vary with the engine RPM.

It is possible to drive an ignition that expects a VR sensor input with a switching device. There's an example on this page using 4-pin GM HEI modules:

http://megasquirt.sourceforge.net/extra/setup-msns.html

It's under VR sensors. The computer in this example grounds the yellow line every time the spark is to fire. It may be possible to substitute the black wire on an Ignitor and use a 1 k resistor in place of the HEI module on the top. Still, it may take a bit more fiddling to get this to work correctly.

SO is it ok to set the gap of my new champion spark plugs to .45? Or is that too much considering i only have a petronix kit with the accel coil and some 8mm wires? What are your recommendations? Please keep in mind i am running:
268 cam
Port and Polished heads
Larger valves
Headers & full exhaust
Webber Carb & Clifford intake manifold

Personal opinion

If it's a pertronix II with their coil. .045
pertronix I with their coil. .040
pertronix I with old coil .035
