What vehicle would be best to consider when searching for a low geared 904??? Wanting a low geared setup for my /6 904, all the v8 904 parts bolt right in to the /6 904???

Yes, if your trans is a '67-up, I believe.

Those are good candidate cars, yes. Any '80-'83 slant-6 passenger car will have the right transmission. I just checked www.car-part.com (searched '82 Diplomat transmission) and came up with a bunch of 'em.

Yes. I've never swapped guts yet, but the idea is that it can be done.

I'm not sure if you have to mix some of the old parts with the new part or swap everything, but if you've got a complete /6 904 and a complete low gear v8 904, then you should have everything you need to build a low gear /6 904. All you should need is lots of patience and a good trans manual.

I can get a couple of those used low gear v8 904 transmissions for around $40 a piece. If I'm lucky, my car already has the low gear 904 from a slant six powered truck, but I still can't exactly identify them by sight, and I'm not really sure what is what from my mopar parts dealer. I'll let you know how it works once I get it back in the car and out to the track. :wink:

pardon my being an @$$#&!%.... there's diffrent ratios for the 904? wich one would be "low" and so...?

our argentinian made 904 have 1st: 2.45 2nd: 1.45 D: 1

...I couldn't remember if it was '67 or '68 because of the CRS I am suffering from due to breathing too many TransX fumes! :lol: Anyway, thanks for clarifying.

The low first gear 904 (I believe it's technically an A-999) has a 2.74 first gear and a 2.54 second.

There is no need for the donor trans to be for a slant 6, by the way.

That's 2.74 1st, 1.54 2nd.

I don't like the low-ratio gearset as much as the regular one.

O.K. Why?

I've heard talk that there is too big of a gap between the 1st and 2nd gear ratio. (Time will tell on this one)

I've also heard that the low gearset makes more noise, but who cares if you're racing?

Or is it something else?

Big gap between 1 and 2 (not such a problem as long as your rear axle ratio, tire size and engine parameters are carefully coördinated so you don't drop out of the torque band at the top or bottom of 1st and 2nd)

Weaker welded-steel gear cage construction (standard gearset cage is stronger machined aluminum) -- not usually a breakage problem unless you're putting enormous power through it

Much noisier in 1st gear (only a problem on the street, and then only if such things bother you).

3.23 werkz good with mine.

Ok, So now what I need to look for is an 80-83 slant 6 tranny right???
Is the converter for these exactly the same as in standard 904 converter?? Think it would work well with 3.55 gears???

No, converter will be lockup. No need to use the guts from a /6 trans, either. Any will do.
