I've been scrounging around the Internet like a junkie in a drug store and keep finding all these cool toys, but none seem to fit a MoPar. I've got a 62 Valiant and I think one of the Flaming River or Ididit steering columns with tilt and wiper/dimmer controls would be really trick. The problem is 2-fold however. First the smallest tube size available is a 2" where the Valiant has a 1 3/4" tube. Also they want to hook up to a Chevy or Ford steering box. The tube size I think is manageable enough but is there an adapter to allow it to mate up to a MoPar steering box? Has anyone done or attempted this? |

About 25 years ago I adapted a tilt/telescoping column from a "67-'68 Imperial to my '63 Dart. I cut off the gear shift selector assembly (not needed with the pushbutton automatic) and found that the coupler bolted up without modification to the power steering box once the column was shortened. With the column and steering wheel painted, and the Imperial emblem removed, the assembly blended with the interior and looked perfectly stock to the casual observer-despite the fact that the Imperial wheel is much smaller in diameter. Now that the car is in the process of restoration, I can't decide whether to install the Imperial column, or return to stock. After the novelty wore off, the tilt/telescope just wasn't used. It stayed in the same position as the stock column and wheel. Neat toy, though. A custom rod shop can shorten the column, attach the appropriate coupler, then sleeve, pin and weld the shaft. --Walt Jackson --1963 Dodge Dart GT convertible |

One more thing: I never measured the diameter of the Imperial column, but it fit the positioning plate that bolts to the firewall. --Walt Jackson --1963 Dodge Dart GT convertible. |

Well, since I originally posted this I went to the actual Flaming River site instead of just to a vendor's site and discovered that they do have a tilt column with a 1 3/4" tube and it is available in several lengths and they also have MoPar adapters so it looks like that will be an easy hook up. |
