Post subject:  Early Vs. Late Model Oil Pans

:?: I received a call from a fellow installing a 225 Slanter out of an early 80's Diplomat into a '66 Barracuda and says the center link is hitting the oil pan enough that he wanted to have me find a V-8 center link ( it's dropped not straight like the slant cars ) I thought slant six oil pans were all the same save stuff like trucks and vans. Thanks for the help. RICK

From personal experience, the '63 to '66 A body slant six oil pans are rounded (i.e. curved) and thus avoid touching the k member.

The later oil pans are squared, and thus touch the early k member.

Just put the early pan on the later engine and you avoid the problem.

I've also seen a 1/4" plate under the p/side mout to lift the engine- & made it clear the cross member.

Make sure you swap the pick -up tube also

Actually, the 66 should have the dropped drag link, six or eight. 64-65 had the two different drag links.

 Ya know Charlie, the funny thing was, right after I wrote this post, I went out to the shop and started working on, strangely enough, a '64 Valiant that's getting a 360. Ya must have been transmittin' cosmic vibrations or sometin' . I'm laying under the car, staring right at the drag link, going" wait a minute....." but then you get some projects home and spend days just trying to figure out where in the wide, wide world of sports half the parts on it came from. Thanks to everyone that's answered. RICK

Been there, done this. You can use a F-body oil pan in an early A-body. The pan will rest against the k-member on the right front corner and across the \6 center link. You can fix this by denting the corner in about 1/2", or cutting the corner out and replacing it with new flat piece of sheet metal. The center link problem can be cured by using a v8 center link or by denting the bottom of pan in about 1/8". There is plenty of clearence from the pitman and idler arms.
