1970 Dart w/225 slant six, 2bbl. Has a manual choke that previous owner put in I'm guessing to avoid some problem with the electrical one. Car starts hard but after warm up runs fine. Can someone tell me what the choke is supposed to do and when it is supposed to do it? The car will start when the choke is in all positions except completely closed, but I feel like I'm missing something that I could be doing to help the car run better. Thanks! |

The purpose of the choke is to enrichen the mixture when the car is cold. It does this by closing which creates a high vacuum in the carb which pulls additional air from the jets. it is supposed to be almost fully closed when the car is first started and opening gradually as the car warms up. Since you have a manual choke, you have to learn the curve of opening the blade as you get the car warmed up. Previous owner must have been unable to get the automatic choke to work correctly. |

I figured as much. I bet there are folks who swear by a manual choke and those that like the auto choke. We'll see how long it lasts - I think I have the needed parts to switch it back. Thanks for the info. |
