Hello wizards, I read the old slant zix news tech stuff, read all the old linkage postshere, asked on sweptline forum, asked around town...and I still can't get an answer about which Hurst shifter is the one for my A833OD. My tranny has aluminum case and cast iron tail with one set of mount holes near case. I have bought 4 different shifters off ebay, and the closest one to working is the Hurst Competition (at least I think it is such because it came with that literature, sure matches the pics, and was advertised as such). However, one of its rods is way too long (the 1 -2) and the shifter was bead blasted and has grit in its guts. I also got one with a nice rubber boot..but that shifter doesn't doesn't match the attachment holes on the plate that bolts to the tranny to hold the shifter. The "bottom" two holes are about 3/16 too close together. An old local mopar hand told me to just make the rod by cutting, heating and bending and rethreading the long one to fit it to the 1 - 2 tab from the shifter. Well, I can do that but then still would have what seems like a mighty floppy side to side gritty gutted shifter, or I can machine a billet adapter for the one with the rubber boot, or.... After spending another evening on this with mosquitoes urging me on I gotta ask...what in the heck is the right shifter and/or rod set and is the shifter supposed to be nice and tight side to side? I fully understand setting tabs to neutral, putting reverse full foward and setting rods in the shifter..I am stymied on what is the right shifter! Well, duhh, maybe there is a specific shifter that I should get! Would you all recommend one specific shifter and or rod set? rock '64d100 |

With only one mounting perch I would say it's a a/f transmission. So you would want the rods to an a-body or f-body with a 833od trans. As far as shifters are concerned they all interchange. The standard chryler four speed shifter was the hurst comp plus (not counting the inland). The shifters are relatively easy to rebuild you just have to be careful to keep track of what shims come from where. I would suspect the side to side play is either a loose handle or wear on the pivot bushing. If you just want to do a quick sleazy rebuild to clean out the grit drop the shifter in a bucket of parts cleaner hose it out dry it off and lube heavily with spray lithium grease. |

I think you can still get new rods from Hurst. Hurst used to offer a shifter rebuilding service a reasonable price. |

i tried cleaning up and lubing an old comp plus shifter i had and it was pretty miserable. i finally bought a new b-body shifter from jeg's (without the rods.) the nice thing is the new one is a bolt-on handle setup versus the crappy push in deal that i had. 71-74 b-body pistol grip fits an a-body perfectly btw.  you're on your own for rods. i bought standard 4-speed repro dods/swivels/lever set from a guy on ebay but they suck. i doubt anyone makes the O.D. rods. -james |

mcnoople,Tim and James: THANKS!! You made up my mind and gave me new heart. You are right, nothing to lose by taking apart the one full of sand and having a whirl at fixing it....I will take pics so others may profit. I bought another one on ebay, so will see if it is any better, and just make my own rods using the ones I have as a model. rock '64d100 |

You might try Brewers or Passion Performance. They both deal in nothing but 4 speeds. Think Brewers is reproing the rods - pricey from what I hear. |
