Post subject:  of the two different starters....

Folks,

My '64 d100 uses the non-gear reduction starter that has the solonoid bolted onthe side, kind of a small V8 (hah ha) juice can addititon. This afternoon I rebrushed a pair of the gear reduction starters that have kind of an internal solonoid and began wondering: are the gear reduction and non gear reduction starters interchangeable on slant sixes? Are they interchangeable on the aluminum A833 bellhousings and the other cast iron bellhousings?
I can't see any logical reason why they wouldn't be interchangeable, but this forum always seems to have someone who knows!

I would say no-- the 1960 valiant also had the direct drive starter & it's flywheel tooth count was /is different than the normal gear reduction style--
not sure the count but it's different.

No, they do not interchange - the tooth count on the ring gear is different. Which is something for owners of Canadian-built 1962-65 slant six cars and trucks should watch out for as Chrysler Canada did not use the reduction gear starter on those models. Be especially careful if you are having the torque converter changed as most transmission shops are American franchise operations and do not have correct information on Canadian-built vehicles.

They bolt on in place of one another, but they do not interchange, for as others have mentioned, the ring gear size and tooth count is different for the two starters—therefore the starter drive pinion is different, and spaced differently.

There are several different starters that will interchange with your Chrysler-built direct-drive starter, but...why? Is there something the matter with your present starter?

Well, glad to get the definitve answer and save a flywheel. I may just swap the gear that engages the flywheel ffrom a non-gear reduction to a gear reduction if I ever need another starter...kinda "synthesize" a starter. In fact, as a good obsessive sixer I may do it for the heck of it and try it out now before the need hits. Thanks for asking, SlantSix Dan, and o nothing wrong with my existing starter, just that I, as I bet many of us are, am a parts stasher. I just feel better with a spare of almost everything. Heck, if it wasn't for this forum I would have been stalled for lack of parts at several points. Especially things with electricity that I can't tool up and make.

Won't work. The starter drives are non-interchangeable.
