Post subject:  dead gas guage or sending unit

i have a 1966 dodge dart station wagon and sence ive owned the car the gas guage has never worked ive tried to remove the volt. regulator and bent the tabs a lil to see if it was a contact problem and when i tried to put it back in the volts reg. doesnt seem to wanna go in far enough to touch the cluster, Is it in all the way :? :?:

if it is or isnt i'll fix accordingly next if it still doesnt work where should i start for trying to get my guage to work? ive moved the connector on the gas tank no difference. should i replace the sending unit? if i do and it still doesnt work is it probably the guage.? my speedo stoped working as i was driving and non of my other guages work should i try and swap the whole cluster if i can find one or have it rebuild.

...there should be a ground strap between the pickup where it exits the tank and the long metal fuel line. I'd check that it's there and good contact, but I'm betting that the float is sunk. If not that, check the rheostat on the sending unit when you remove it... sometimes those little rivets turn to dust - a teeny tiny machine screw (Radio Shack) can fix that problem.

EDIT: Just noticed the part where you said NONE of your gauges work - that's kinda suspicious, isn't it?

sounds like the cluster is shot. you have any water damage (discoloration) back there?

no water damage, now that i think about it towards the end of my slant driving days(before accident) i noticed the temp guage worked, it would go up if i hit that gas or stayed still, but the car never over heated (not when the guage worked well appeared to work) i think i might pull the sending unit, move the float see if that works, then make my own volts. regulator that i was reading about :P

I have a simalar problem on my 68 Dart. The cluster works fine exept for
the gas gauge, it only works on rainy/humid days.
