I would like someones thoughts on replacing my steering box. Mine is worn out and I would like to either rebuild it or exchange it. Also is there a way to make the manual steering a little easier to turn. I am OLD! Maybe change the ratio etc..thanks |

so your old eh? and you want to change the radio to help your steering, hehe. swap to power while your rippin it all apart, you can try different ratio's in your box too |

Not sure there are any "gears" that will make it easyer to turn  Never heard about that...Most go the other way. I guess power steering would be best, or you will end up turning the wheel 86.5 turns, lock to lock  But then, maybe your worn out box makes it hard to turn??? |

Pumping the front tires up to 32 - 36 psi works wonders in the steering department. A good exercise program also works wonders and just may let you out live your car.

There are 2 adjustments on the steering box, one on the side for sector and one under that big flat nut for the worm shaft. Most old repair manuals tell how to adjust them to take out the play. You don't want the sector/cross shaft too tight though, 'cause that will mess up the self -centering function and make it much harder to steer. Just take out the slack, and check it with front wheels off the ground. Also many of the older boxes have a dried up seal at sector/cross shaft, causing all the lubricant [85W90] to leak out. The seal is very easy to fix once the box is out of the car. That can be the hardest part! Replacing seal, lubing it up and adjusting it can work wonders, all for about $20. Seals are available from Napa. |

For easier steering you could have the caster adjuster negative. It will make it easier to steer but will likely affect high speed stability. |

i know that if you have powersteering you dont have to turn you wheel so much i dont have ps and that sucks, could i put a pw steering box on my car but w/o the ps unit/pump it may be harder but at least i wont have to turn the wheel a mile or so
