Hi everyone:

Ok, after months of procrastination, and everything else getting in the way, I'm finally going to take the '68 Dart to a test-n-tune day at New England Dragway. My 14 year old daughter has been looking forward to this all summer! It's the closing weekend, so it's now or never.

The car is a completely stock 225 Dart 270, with highway gears (2.76, I believe) in the 7.25 rear. Only change has been a set of 14" tires, new plugs and points, and a little timing advance "by ear".

Any suggestions for breaking this thing out of the 20.00+ bracket? Much engine work ahead this winter, but hoping to get a baseline number for now.

I will be getting some 94 octane gas, and maybe a little 104 octane boost, so as to tweak the timing ahead a little more. Also taking off the 5 blade flex fan and returning to the 4-blade original. Think I have all the tech issues sorted out, added an overflow bottle recently.

Should I powerbrake before leaving the line? Converter is stock as well...

Any suggestions appreciated. Took me 43 years to get to the strip.
Reading the slantsix.org forums has been invaluable!

Thanks -Mac

My one tip is to try retarding the timing from where it is now, or at least try different settings. Retarded may run faster than the stock setting or wherever you have it now.

If it's a stock motor, don't waste $$ on octane boost since it won't help with low compression.

Lou

Take out any weight that can be removed easy ie spare tire jack ect.
Lou is right dont worry with octane boost. Also bring the car up on the converter.
1 Base line the car in drive and look at your times
2 Manualy shift the car about 4800 rpm if you have a tach that should pick the car up.
3 If the car spins the rear tires try putting back in the spare tire and jack
4 This how i got started nine years ago with a stock 74 Dart Sport Slant
But be warned this Slant Racing is additive . :D :D Thanks Ron Parker

For your very first time on a drag strip, just pay attention to the basics that you've read about and follow the directions of the staging lanes crew and starter.

Keep it basic and don't stress too much about cutting a tenth here or a tenth there.

Just enjoy the day with your daughter! Many tracks will not allow an unlicensed passenger to ride in the car with you, so prepare for that.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

Oh yeah! And Slant 6 Drag Racing is WAY Addictive!!!!!
