I bought a 70 dart with a /6. I have always wanted to do an injected turbo leaning tower of power project. well the dart i got has the slant 6 with a 904 tranny. so i figured now is the time.

I spoke to a knowledgeable transmission guy on bionicdodge he said i would have to get an a998/999 tranny and switch the internals into the 904 case then buy a shift kit and a good converter to make the 904 handle 300 to 350 hp. i will race my toy occasionlly but its more of a street toy/cruiser/sleeper. this sounds kind of expensive and above my skill levels so i thought it would be easier to swap in a manual tranny and go from there. charlieS told me that all of you racers use the 904 and i thought i should talk to some of you and find out how much modification i need and the cost before i make up my mind on which way to go????/

thanks for your time and i look forward to your replies.

The stock 904 will handle a lot of abuse, but 350 HP is quite a bit. I would tend to agree with your friend. Find a V8 904 or 999 and swap the guts in. You will get the 4-pinion planetaries and more clutches in the drums.

I have been drag and road racing  with 904s for several years now and have never blown one. They work great, are lightweight, and are well supported in the industry. The most power I've put to one is about 270HP in my 64 Dart. 50k hard street miles, 1500-2000 miles of road course, 1-200 drag passes, and no breakage.

thanks lou and that sounds pretty sturdy to me..and congrats on having fun with your ride instead of sitting it in a garge somewhere. Im not 100% i can get to 350 but its my goal. the automatics scare me and all that switching was a little over my skill level so i looked into a different direction.

I just ran into a deal today and bought an a833 4spd overdrive. bell housing clutch linkages everything complete. so i am going manual.

and i got a free truck after i remove all the stuff i need for my dart. a running slant 6 with the super six set up on it. 2 barrel carb / intake.

2 cool

Me and Dale Rose have 904 Transmisions that was built by the same person. My transmission has been in thr car for three years and is a race car 12.60 in 1/4 7.79 in the 1/8. No problems. Dale goes 6.34 in the 1/8 and has had no transmisions problems. A 904 will hold up if the builder knows what he doing and knows the transmision. Thanks Ron Parker :D

A&A makes really good parts. You can buy a complete transmission or just the pieces you think you need. Most of the other transmission guys buys Rick's parts and put them in their build-ups.

Give Rick a call and talk to him about what you are planning and he will be more than happy to steer you in the right direction and not try and over sell you.

I know he trans will stand up to serious abuse. Even sub 6's in the 1/8.

The 904 I have was built using the V-8 planetaries and clutches, stock Chrysler clutches and bands, and a Griner low-band apply reverse manual valve body. Seymour figured my motor was making 371 horse at St. Louis.
