I recently had given to me a 74 duster. The body has two rust spots and faded paint. Thats not my issue though. The engine is going to have to be competely torn down, sandblasted and rebuilt. I need to know what I should replace as to gain more horsepower. I know like bigger valves, new camshaft, maybe bigger pistons. What else should be down since I will have access to the entire engine. Price isn't an issue because my brothers autobody teacher can get parts for next to nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

do you want the motor to be a strip/street motor, cause with the stuff i will be giving you you will get pretty bad gas milage, is it a daily driver?

next to nothing  eh awesome, well you could start by porting, polishing, and milling the head .100, as well as putting in bigger valves there is ALOT of hp in those slant heads :) second off you could bore out your slant motor some racers go up to .100 over for a bore which would increase your piston size to 3.56 bore. Next install forged or cast pistons (forged if you plan on running nitrious) next your are going to wanna inspect the rods maybe somone else can talk to you about rods, you are also gonna wanna inspect your crank shaft and have it balanced. then install new main bearings, and cam bearings.

from what ive told you i would suggest to buy all of these parts from Here you will get everything you need and it is cheap. but also check on those prices at your local store. next you are gonna wanna select a cam shaft, this is something you are going to have to decide if you want strip/street, how streetable do you want your car. Next order a offy 4bbl intake from summit followed buy either a holley 390 or an edlbrock 500 both have been used.

Ive probably left some stuff out so other people can follow up

o and you may want to swap out rear ends or install a posi on ur 7 1/4 its up to you and what you wanna do

Since cost isn´t an issue, get a good head cast :P

There is always the long rods...

I would be driving it daily, but no more than 5 miles in distance. I will make a 20 mile trip once a week home, but thats the farthest. I'll probably have my brothers autobody do the work, that way they get expierence and I get FREE labor. Plus the teacher is one of the best mechanics that I have ever met.

I think that the engine is a 225, but I won't swear to it. I didn't think to get the exact number, but I do know its a slant six. Its also a 72, not a 74, but there isn't alot of dif. Lets say that I buy the rebuild kit, and put a beefy cam in it, how much horsepower would I be getting. What exactly is the base horsepower number for my duster anyway, cause I keep finding different numbers on the net.

well the bass number for your slant now would be what is it 145hp at the crank(correct if wrong i forgot the year it droped) then you have to account for the 15% drivetrain loss, with just a basic rebuild up will do you alot of good, and a cam will also help alot too. One of the biggest things you can do to a slant is unlock the power in the head  you'd be suprised how much power is in that thing alone :)

Here's yet another set of numbers:
NHRA says 110 HP for '72 Duster with a 225.

When you say unlock the head you mean....? I know that I should know what your saying but right now I can't think of what you mean.

145 is the number I found the most.

Don't go nuts with head milling until you take a few measurements. I.E. Piston-deck clearance, head cc's, and head gasket compressed thickness. With those numbers you can calculate how much to mill for a desired compression ratio. (stock is around 8-8.5:1)

Stock slant bore is 3.400". A .100" overbore would yield a bore of 3.500". I wouldn't recommend boring any further than needed to clean up the bores. And while many racers may go .100" over (which open up piston selection) if you want to go that far it is a good idea to have the block sonic checked.

I talked to my dad today and he said that the engine should fire up once I drain and refill the fluids. Which intake and carb would be best for the 225? I looked on flatlander racing and couldn't find either for a 225, only 318's and above.

You could find an offy 4bbl intake, summit.....probably many other places too

There are some on ebay, for 100-150, when i looked earlyer today.

The holley 390 seems like a popular 4bbl, except if you live close to D W.
Then you have to use an ancient carter, or a elderbroken 500...

That is if you want a 4 bbl...
There is always the super six 2bbl intake...

Try to fill the carbs float bowl with fuel, before attempting to start it, yeah, and try to turn it by hand first, if it has been sitting for a while.

Get someone to make you a nice ste of headers, that fit

The Hooker Headers, any good? I plan on getting them soon but wanted to know if anyone has them and what they have to say about them. I am not sure exactly whether the ones I looked at will fit although they say for a 70-74 Duster. Any feedback would be appreciative.
