Post subject:  Mini Starter

I want to swap the starter in my Dart sport slant 6 for a mini starter. Will it just bolt right in? and will the parts store(autozone)accept my orignal starter as a core?
thanks

Yes, an '89-'00 starter for a 3.9, 5.2 or 5.9 Dodge truck will bolt right in.

Buying a starter at AutoZone is a great way to handcuff yourself to a lengthy string of cråppy "remanufactured" garbage that fails again and again and again.

Why do you want to make this swap...?

You could just go to a wrecking yard and pick one up for 25-35 bucks. They are very reliable and well built units. They spin the engine much faster than the stock unit, and don't really sound much different. About the only thing to fail on them are the soloniod contacts. An easy fix, as the starters are basicly the same as starters used on Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, etc so rebuild kits are readily available. I had to replace the contacts on mine and took maybe a half hour, including removing and replacing the starter on the engine.

Post subject:  Oh yeah....

I just treated my car to a $50 junkyard ministarter out of a 1994 Truck, and a nice Optima Redtop battery (that nice Exide special, just didn't like being run once a month for 8 months...and decided to go 'flat' when I got home).

My car had a mopar 383 starter under the hood and it would take a few moments to fire over...after swapping out the heavy/large starter for that cute little thing with the heat shield it rolls over by just bumping the key...(and it seems to spin the crank a bit faster too...which doesn't help when trying to 'bump' the ignition to get to TDC)....

I like it, and it's great during cold starts too! :D
