I have a 1964 valiant, automatic. I am getting ready to replace my 170 with a 80's 225. While I am doing this i am upgrading to the super six package and also am interested in switching to power steering. What pitfalls, if any, can i look forward to in the conversion and what donor cars would have the appropriate set-up for the conversion to power steering. Also while i have the engine out I am going to replace a lot of the front suspension as well as shocks. Any suggestions? I would appreciate any comments and advice...thanks so much...Mark

When you put in the later engine, you need to use a 1/8" annular adaptor ring between the newer engine and the older trans. Pat Blais has the ring you need, and it is a low-cost item. tflitepatty@verizon.net .

Are ya *sure* you want power steering? How come? A '64 Valiant isn't a heavy car; under normal circumstances P/S generally isn't necessary. If it's to cure the slow steering ratio (too many turns from full left to full right), then there are easier and more satisfactory ways of doing it. Power steering makes it easier to turn the steering wheel, it's true, but it also adds a lot of weight to the front of the car, a lot of leak points that like to leak, takes up more space under the hood and the belt/pump bracket is a pain, and sharply reduces road feel unless you spend the big bucks for a custom steering box. What're your thoughts here?

Don't know if you saw this thread, but it's got a lot of comments on the matter. I love the 20:1 manual in my '62.

Stock ratio is 24:1, giving 5-3/4 turns lock-to-lock.

You can buy a rebuilt box with 20:1, or buy the 20:1 worm and ball nut assembly and build up your own (the one in your car or another). It depends on your budget, skill and patience!

www.firmfeel.com has 24:1, 20:1, and 16:1 rebuilt manual boxes for 275, 375, 475 respectively.

These people rebuild boxes too but I haven't seen a website for them, not sure of their prices.

Well, lessee here.

Firm Feel says you'll spend $375 for a rebuilt 20:1 box from them.

Steer & Gear says "Call for a Quote" on the 20:1 box.

Both are reputable outfits that've been around a fair long time, so you'd probably do fine to shop by price.
