This might come under the catagory of stupid question but ill ask anyway. Is there any problem in shortening the tube on the oil filter housing so that you could use a shorter filter. Seems to be it wouldnt make alot of difference and it would be out of the way of the distributer cap so that it is easier to remove the cap. I change my oil every 3000 miles anyway with a new filter.. |

why would you want to use a shorter filter? even with the 3000 mile oil change i recently converted to a larger filter and i just had to pull the dist. and cap to reset the engine to tdc. everything came out with a minimum of difficulty. everything is cramped on that side of the engine, but with cars of this age i would always err on the side of more protection. why are you needing to fuss with the dist. so often? |

i really dont fuss with it often..the left clip is just a pain to get back on on that side..I noticed many bigger engines that use smaller filters and figured maybe it wasnt that important..i usually just drive to local car shows with it anyway |

i have had the best success with dist. caps this way. put the cap on the distributor make sure the tabs of the distributor line up with the receptacle on the cap. tilt the cap to the left and press the metal tab. it goes in easily with the cap tilted. now set the cap flush atop the distributor. press the tab on the right and she should snap right in. its best to do the left first cause its a lot harder to reach. |

I'd go along with the other opinions here and carry on using the larger oil filters. There's nothing good to be gained by using a smaller one—just less margin for problems if they occur. The LH distributor cap clip snicks right on if you squeeze it inward at its base, but it's a real struggle if you try to squeeze at the middle of the clip as seems logical. |

I just ordered a TransDapt oil filter relocation kit from Summit. My big gripe is that the filter is upside down. It's messy changing it, and I can live with that, but I spent too many years as a truck driver. It just irks me to put an unprimed oil filter on an engine. It may not realy make that much difference in engine longjvity. I have a D100 with lot's and lot's of room to relocate it. Pat |
