Post subject:  Trans and motor swap questions, 73 to 64?

I found a 64 dart gt that I'm going to look at to buy tomorrow.

It is an automatic, will it be a pushbutton car?

If so, what would it take to put my super sixed slant and auto trans out of my 73 dart into the 64?

I'll need the hanging cable style gas pedal, I know but I haven't found what I'm looking for about the trans using the search yet.

Any help guys?

You will need a shifter/linkage, a drive shaft, and a modified speedo cable.
The 64 will be a pushbutton shifter/cable shifter, with a flange on the rear of the trans, for a ball and trunnion front u-joint.

It would be a big job to put the '73 automatic in the '64. You'd either have to hack (cut and weld) the floor for a floor shifter, or put in a '66 (only) steering column assembly. You'll also have to drill some holes in the subframe and obtain the shift linkage from a '66-up A-body ('66 only for no-mods installation).

MUCH easier to keep the '64 trans, which—yes—will be a pushbutton unit. All you need to put the '73 engine in front of it is a 1/8" annular adaptor ring to take up the extra space between the pre-'68 small-nose torque converter and the '68-up crankshaft flange counterbore.

Plus, pushbuttons are way cooler than boring ol' shift levers.

Plus they're fun when watching someone try to figure out how to drive the car................

I installed the pushbutton assy from a 64 valiant, in a console, between the seats, in my 66 Cuda. Used the 64 trans, but also converted from the Ball and Trunion to a normal u-joint

Cool swap! It is easier to go the direction you went (cable-shift trans into a '66-up car) than to go the direction asked about in this thread.

When I raced my 65 Valiant, in the 70's, I found it was easy to miss a shift, with the stock colum shifter. There were a few floor shifters for the cable shifted trans, available, but they were expensive. There were plenty of pushbutton cars in the salvage yards, at that time. I liked it so much, I have done the conversion on all my early "A" bodys. One thing to point out, it is necessary to either use a pushbutton valve body or a 64 manual shift valve in the 65 valve body.

Column shifters can make that problem. If you ever run into it again, note that there's a very easy modification that can be done on the '65 (only) column shifter: You just grind deeper the detents in the detent plate (base of steering column under rubber boot) and put a reverse-ramp on the wall between the D and N detents.

I think I'll stay with my pushbuttons. I should have enough parts/transmissions, to last me.

www.wildcatmopars.com sells the adapter for about $20. Besides the adapter, you will also need to use the motor mounts and oil pan and pickup off the old motor.

The car turned out to be a 65. A really neat little car. I also might have found some parts for my 73 but my dad is hooked on the 65. $500 for a complete car with a pretty good body.
