There's a "secret" spring clip on the hub that holds them onto the pivot spindle. Look underneath and move the clip back with a small screwdriver or pick.

My frustration level is pegged on high after trying to remove the wiper arms on my '64 Valiant. I've soaked them in penetrating oil for 3 days and tried prying up on both sides, then tapping the shaft end with a hammer has no effect. Naturally, there is no room to use a standard sized puller. Any suggestions before I design and build a mini-puller? |

Thanks for the reply, but mine don't have any clips that I can find. They are retained by a nut that is C-clipped to the arm. I think that loosening the nut is supposed to jack the arm loose from the shaft, but when I loosened the nut, it merely popped out of the C-clip and the splines must be rusted together. The service manual only says to remove the arm from the shaft and doesn't have a close-up view or explain the method of attachment. |

They do make small gear pullers and a battery terminal puller would prolly work. What kinda car is it. |

I seem to remember the '65 having the press-fit with the hidden spring, and the 64's having the nut that holds the arm down. With a pair of really broad-headed screwdrivers or a small puller, they should come off after removing that nut. |

lightly tap the wiper arm base to help loosen the rust- tap on all sides --it will come loose-- also a gear type puller would put some tension on it -- if the tapping doesn't get it!!! you can aways tap harder!!!!! |

After another day of soaking, I tried again and no amount of tapping..short of destructive...will loosen them. Because of the way they are recessed into the sheet metal, even a small puller's jaws won't fit under the arm base, so I guess I'll have to make a custom puller. |

good luck -- maybe a different rust remover?? PB blaster?? -- have a friend pry (apply force) upward while you tap---- if it's rusted that bad --your serrated edges might not be any good when you do finally get it apart |

Just an update for those who might face this situation in the future. After another day of soaking with PB Blaster and trying to remove the arms by prying pressure and more than a modest amount of tapping, I made a puller out of 1/8" steel. It took a lot of pressure, but I did manage to remove one side. The driver's side still will not come off and that was after applying enough pressure with the puller to bend the steel! Since there was evidence on the removed arm that the penetrating oil had indeed begun to penetrate, I soaked the remaining arm and put tension on the puller. I'll check it again tomorrow and if that doesn't work, I guess I'll have to design a stronger puller. |
