Post subject:  Burning smell from heater

Recently I have been getting a burning smell out of the heater when I turn it on high. There is no smell when the heater is on low. I used to be able to set it on high with no burning smell. Any ideas what this could be?

Hmm... is the motor making any funny noises?

Are you sure when on low, the burning smell is completely gone or is just there but faint? Its either something in the heater box like leaves or debris that your cooking, or the motor itself.

Usually on low the current is passed through a resistor to drop the voltage and make the motor run slower, but if you say the smell is only when on high, then the power is going direct to the motor bypassing the resistor so that (a bad resistor) can't be it.

Take the hoses off of the box and see if theres any crud in there.

If memory serves me right, you still have to drop the box to replace the motor, so either way your going to need to drop the box to clean it and/or replace motor

check your wiring, I've seen many Mopars of this era that melt the wiring and cavity in the fuse box when the blower motor starts going bad and drawing more than normal current. Remember more current thru a circuit= more heat.

what does the burning smell like? electrical or antifreeze? If its freeze you may have a leaky core, same situation happened to me and it turned out the core was on its way out. Thats what stop leak will do to ya
