My mechanic says my new Holley 390 won't balance, the driver side of the idle circuit is dead and incapable of being balanced. Does anyone have experience with getting these things to work? I can't afford to be buying new carburetors everytime I turn around. What is the exchange possibilites with Summit Racing? Help!!!!!!!!! bwhitejr |

as long as your mechanic hasn't done anything to change the configuration of the holley (pulled it apart), and you bought the Holley from them less than 90 days ago, they'll refund the money...there are also manufacturers warranties in place... Exactly what was the reason it was "dead"...no fuel? idle well not drilled correctly? is it the fuel wells in the fuel block? He just wants you to return it and try an Edelbrock (insert Dennis comment here ![]() just curious, -D.Idiot |

Check to make sure there is not dirt in the air bleeds. |

I'd say throw it away, just because it's a piece of crap holley, but why does your mechanic need to "balance" anything? Unless you're running some kind of experimental dual plane slant six intake, it's sitting over an open plenum... what's to balance? I can see a dead idle circuit causing problems, but the "balance" part is bullshit. D/W |

I may have misinterpreted what he said. But I believe he couldn't set the idle mixture on the driver side. It is only running (idling) on the passenger side barrel. I tried to set the idle mixture according to the instructions using a vacuum gauge looking for the highest possible vacuum reading. Boy... it made no difference which way you turned the mixture screw as far as vacuum went. It did tend to make it die if you went to far one direction. And that was on the passenger side barrel. I will have to buy a new Edelbrock (500 cfm?) if I can't get him looking in the right direction. This mechanic has 35 years experience and KNOWS what he is talking about. Any misinformation is coming from me. ![]() I need something to tell him tomorrow, or the carburetor is off the vehicle and I am buying an Edelbrock and selling a very slightly used Holley 0-8007 390cfm. bwhitejr |

I think what he means by balance (assuming it works this way) is, since you have idle mixture adjustments on both primaries, shouldn't they both be working in the idle circuit? I think he is saying that only one works, the other doesn't. How that is arrived at is beyond me......that is why it is at the mechanics shop. ![]() This a brand new , fresh-out-of-box carburetor. I don't anticipate any crap in the air bleeds or should I? Are both idle mixture circuits supposed to be on while idling? Maybe that is a bad assumption. bwhitejr |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh, I understand. I understand they are junk! Racers do fine with the because all they are concerned with is Wide Open Throttle performance. They dont care if they are driveability nightmares that foul plugs and are prone to leak! ![]() ![]() As I said, racer Charlie has my last cast off mistake! D/W |

One time I had big stumbling problems and idling problems on my stock 1920. I later learned that when the block had been bored out at the machinists shop they only screwed the studs in lightly. I found one of the intake studs for the carburetor hold-down nuts was only lightly screwed in, probably causing a vacuum leak. I never found out for certain because in trying to tighten down the nut on this loosened stud I cracked the carb body. Then I switched to a Weber and had to replace the studs with bolts, when I found the problem. |

If this is a brand new carb, I would send it back under warrentee. If You want to sell it cheap, let me know. DW has been falling behind in his used Holley supply. ![]() |

I tend to agree... scrap the Holley... if it wasn't giving you fits now, don't worry, it will be shortly. Go with the Carter! |

Bad news! I was collecting parts all Summer and I looked at the Sales receipt. It was dated July 26, 2005. So, my 90 days was up October 26, 2005. So, now I am stuck making the Holley work. Any suggestions? Other than throwing it away anyway ![]() Will my gas mileage improve? The motor has 100 miles on it, will it get better mileage later. It appears to suck gas now. But it could be the driver of a new engine with lots more power ![]() bwhitejr |
