for those who want to know, i did a clutch on a 83 cj-7 with a t-5 and just for kicks i checked the gear ratios. they were:
first 4.0:1
second 2.3:1
third 1.5:1
fourth 1:1
fifth 0.68?:1
i would guess that a 2.9x rear gear would work well with these gears or you could throw some 3.23 behind and have it act like it has 4.10. still would have to change the output shaft and tailhousing to work with 2wd(this had a transfer case on it). any way hope this helps somebody.

possibly, i not sure with those gear ratios. only the cherokees could be had with two wheel drive and a five speed. some of those had a puegot(sp?) tranny in them and used a internal hyd. throwout bearing. which wouldn't be that bad if it could be made to work. but keep in mind that cj's came with 235-75-15 tires, cherokees had 215-75-15 tires, and some wranglers had 30-9.50-15 tires. putting a smaller tire on may not allow the tranny to work well with the gear spread in it. a note: all grand cherokees had automatics.

Stay away from the Peugeot trans... it is the laughingstock of Jeep trannys... J-U-N-K. Also remember that tire size by itself isn't the only variable. going from 215s to 235s isn't gonna be much of a difference. These vehicles could be had with anywhere from a 3.07 gear to a 4.10 gear in the diff. This would be a bigger variable than the diffrernces between the 2 tire sizes. On the hudraulic throwout bearing, the AX 5 and AX15 had them until 93. (the hydraulic throwout bearing is a form of an internal slave cylinder). Now the AX-15 in my 97, has an external mount slave cyl., with a more conventional looking fork, albeit shorter and doesn't protrude outside the bell. The T-5 was discontinued in the Jeeps when they changed the CJ over to a Wrangler. They did use the T-5 in some cars, too. (mustangs, camaros, etc) The peugeot trans was only used (thank God) for about 3 or 4 years, then they got smart and quit using them
