well hi everyone, i need all of your opinions and advice. the more you help the better :P

im gonna skip right to the questions i have

I just got my license last summer and my dad surprised my with a wrecked up 73 swinger he bought off some guy for 300 bucks *very minor rust* Well, for the first month my dad was in charge of the rebuilding and work. He threw in a stocker /6, got alignment Blah blah blah. As time grew on i soon caught on with interest and grew fond of muscle. when i found about about 318's and 340's and 360's i felt ashamed of a slant, but then found out about the great benefits of a slant.

well ive come here to ask how do i get more performance for my slant?( i know it might be a waste, but might be worth a try) Keep in mind that i also want to get a good mpg ratio and only have a lil less than 1000 bucks to spend on parts. anybody have any ideas???

HELP!!!please

PS i jsut got the car back from the shop and got all the body work done. its all primered up ill have some pics later

First off, tells us what you have

cuin of slant
tranny
differential ratio
tires (wheel & tire size)
brakes (size, disc/drum,drum/drum, tennis shoes)
carb (1bbl, 2bbl)
exhaust

then what you want
acceleration
mpg
cornering/handling
braking ability

Just fix it up, and give it a good tuneup.

Drive while you save cash, and make plans...

i had a rebuilt holley 1barrel carb, but it jsut wasnt working for me so i bought a "performance" non rebuilt carb off ebay for 60 bucks(brand new in box!)

i have a 225 with an automatic, disc brakes(tire size might changeso its not definite for the moment).not really looking for the handling but if theres a way to help then please let me know. I was really jsut looking for a bit more acceleration. I was handed an msd 5 ignition just today from my cousin. still have to put that in.

any help?

ok, here's what i'd do.........

Basic tuneup (plugs, cap and rotor) & valve adjustment
Make sure everything is in good shape (i.e. brakes, tires)

Then as things wear out, then improve them...
Also there's tweaking that's more time consuming than money intensive (distributor recurve)

Tires wear out, then better tires, wider tires (at least 70 series), maybe bigger rims (as budget indicates)
Shocks wear out, replace them with good ones (at least KYB's)
Add Anti-roll bars

Handling helps more than you think.....

My biggest change was front and rear anti-roll bars. With the better handling you don't have to slow down for the corners (overtaxing your brakes), then you don't have to speed up again (wearing out your right foot)......

On twisty roads, no one's ever passed me, and a /6 does have the power for going up the hill (ok, getting past the idiot slow drivers is a little trickier, you just have to think about it more).

Got questions, someone here will know the answer

Well not everyone is gonna agree with me on this one, but I'll give you my thoughts anyway. Do like everyone said and start with the complete tune up. (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, Set the timing, adj valves ect.) Then I would start looking for an intake manifold and carb. I would look on ebay and find a 4 barrel intake and carburetor. I would also look for a set of shorty headers and free up the exhaust a little. your msd ignition will definately help also. The 4 brrl. will be a little big for the stock slant six, but if you continue building up your engine you'll definately need it later on. I'm assuming that you dont want to get into any internal engine work yet, So next on my list would be a different rear end with higher gears. But you have to be careful or you gas mileage is gonna be really bad. Just keep any eye on ebay, and on this sight in the for sale section, and start collecting all the high performance parts you can find (and afford). Have fun, and good luck with your project!

thanks to the responses.

what kind of engine modifications do you all suggest? ( i.e. 4 barrel manifold & carb, bigger cam, headers) or is that all too many mpg and not enough of a change?

if yes to any of those suggestions? what company makes the better product for street/daily driven use?

I say 2bbl manifold, and carb, a bit bigger exhaust.
Should help, until you want MORE!
Maybe a cam? Then.....

Maybe front swaybar?

What gears do you have?
