What should be done to check out and freshen up an 8.25" rearend from a later A-body before putting it under my '64? Are there any known weaknesses for use behind a mild street-driven 225 / 904, that might see some autocrossing? I know I'll need to shorten the driveshaft - and take a close look at the ball and trunnion in the process. I assume I'll need different U-bolts. I'll take a look at the brakes - wheel cylinders, shoes, drums, etc. There is a set of 14" LBP rallyes waiting for rubber in my garage. This car ('64 Valiant) is primarily a daily driver that I'm upgrading as I go. It currently has 10.87" disks up front and the SBP 7.25" rear with 9"X2" drums. I want to do some autocrossing for fun - I'm sure it and I will be outclassed - but need to keep it practical for street and highway use. |

if autocrossing you had better put new c-clips in. they are the only thing holding the outborad axle in during a hard turn. apart from obvious stuff (stripped threads, broken parts, etc) make sure all the seals are in good shape and look for excessive play in the spider gears if it's an open diff. -james |

You want to check the axle bearings (have one in the shed that came factory with a driver's side "skraaawnk" at 45 mph...the dealer replaced the guts of the assembly supposedly...and when I last ran it it 'skrunked' at 65 mph...). The C-Clips and retaining slot for the C-clips are important...the axle wasn't meant for hard cornering...lots of Steve McQueen turns will eventually stress and either pop the clip, or bust the retaining end off the shaft itself. Make sure the axle assembly has no water in it, the vent is clean, check the diff teeth for any chips and 'off pattern' wear. Fill with the proper amount of oil and have fun.... U-bolts will be for the 3" tube (just bought a set at my favorite mom and pop auto store!) good luck, -D.Idiot |
