How many miles do you get out of a set of spark plugs for a slant 6?

Don't have to deal with smog tests with a 64, so there's no need to change them just before the test (whether I need to or not) like with my pickup (toyota 22re)......

The 62 Factory Service Manual recommends that they be cleaned and gapped every 8000 miles and replaced every 20,000. Personally I like to do a tuneup every spring which always includes new spark plugs.

Spark plugs today last a great deal longer than they used to when our cars were new. The primary reason why? Lead-free gasoline. Today's gasoline not only doesn't contain plug-fouling Lead, but also tends to burn much cleaner than even the unleaded gasoline of 10 or 15 years ago. It has to; modern fuel injection and emission control systems demand cleaner-burning fuels. Also, spark plug materials and build techniques are better. They have to be; US Federal law requires that automakers warrant their vehicles' emission compliance for 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on vehicle class. Better ignition systems also extend spark plug life, for a spark plug that'll quit firing reliably with a points system will carry on working with a higher-potential electronic system.

So, 8000-mile regaps and 20,000-mile replacements are really overly frequent for most any slant-6 in proper repair and tune, driven normally on present fuels. There should be no need to regap the plugs during their service life. Pull and check 'em at 15,000 miles or so. If they read normally, put 'em back in!

So Dan does that mean that a champion plug built today is better than what was installed at the factory.

I changed the Autolite plugs in my engine the other day. Not sure when I put them in, but the old ones only costed $.99 and the new ones where $1.39.
