Results of some test fitting that I was doing. These are Mustang rims.

View from the inside. Knuckle is from an FMJ car. Those knuckles are lighter and taller than the stock ones. Caliper adapter is home made. Rotor is from a Mercedes, caliper is from a Porsche 993 twin turbo car.

Why do you want to ruin a '65 Dodge like that?!

Homemade adaptor? I wish I had a cnc mill in my house. Very nice work will they bolt to a early A-body and fit in the wheelwells. Is the rod end hanging off the strut rod a sway bar link?

Andy,

Are those stock Mustang rims (which year?) and do you know the off-set/backspacing for them?

They are stock 2003 Cobra Mustang rims. They have 6.12 inches of backspacing.

I don't know about early A body cars but this setup will fit in an A2 or A3 car.

Is that a ceramic rotor?

Post subject:

No, nothing that exotic. It is a stock rotor off of a big Mercedes sedan. 13 x 1.250 with a bolt pattern that is close enough to a Mopar that only minor machining is required.

I guess the dull grey finish threw me off... it apparently hasn't been used or machined.

Yep those rotors are brand new. They are covered with some type of electro-finish to keep them from rusting. It isn't paint but seems to be a thin plating, probably zinc or something like that. I need to finish up the engine before these brakes see any duty. I was running the viper rotors last time I had the car out but since then I've switched to the Mercedes setup.

How did you get the rotors to fit on the spindle? Did you turn the spindle in a lathe, or what?

Just in case I ever get tired of R-body rotors...

I made a custom hub. Looks something like this setup but I used steel since this is a street car. The hub in the picture is from aluminum since it was for a road race car.

Very cool. Why is improving a car "ruining" it? I used a set of 16X8's and 16X9's from a Conquest TSI on my Aspen R/T. A friend with a large lathe turned the centers out so they would fit the hubs. The bolt pattern was the metric equivilent (114.5X5) of 5 on 4 1/2, so the rest was a bolt on. I had to trim a small strip (about 3/16's) from the edge of the upper control arm by the ball joint and use stick on wheel weights on the inside. Other than that, they fit great, looked great and let me run 255/50/16 Comp T/A's all around. I paid $200 for the whole set and the machining was done as a favor. He bored the holes to a size that would take a small chrome cap. I topped off the caps with some spare Weld Wheel emblems. A lot of customers at the shop (Speed Merchant) wanted to buy "some of those Weld Wheels on the Aspen out there".

The car also had a lot of other suspension work, a non OD 4 speed and a rebuilt (worked on) 360. I was into the whole car for about $2800 (in 1991) and it was as quick as a new Corvette at the time (so it was quicker than a Mustang GT or Z28) and would handle WAY better than anyone thought it could. Cop car suspension, Koni's, poly bushings everywhere, aluminum blocks to replave the leaf spring isolators, cast iron K-member mounts from a cop car and those fat Comp T/A's. It was great chasing Turbo Carerras around freeway cloverleafs at 80 mph!

Anyway, the point on the wheels was that there is plenty on "other" technology out there that is easily adaptable to our cars and really does make big improvements. I can't see how making it better is ruining it.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I suspect the "ruin" comment referred to the use of Ford parts on a Mopar. Personally, I have little brand loyalty. Think of those items as spoils of war!
Nice setup, Andy!
