Hello, I was just wondering if a Clifford intake would really gain anything over an Offy. Here's my combo.
.060 over 225 with .030 taken off
Ported head with small block Ford valves. 1.78 and 1.45, if I recall correctly
Offy intake
390 Holley
Hooker headers into 2.25 duals and Magnaflows with turndowns before the rear end
Comp 264 cam
Torque converter is slightly above stock, I think around 2200. But I don't have a tach yet, so I can't tell for sure
Let me know if I let anything out. I know the Offy is supposed to have more low end since it has smaller runners and plenum, but is it a large difference? This engine is daily driven, but I would like to take it to the drag strip sometime in the future. Oh yeah, I also plan to replace the gears (2.76s?) with 3.55s or so.
Anyone compared both? Any 1/4 mile time comparisons? Thanks for the help!

Forgot to add that the builder said the compression came out to be about 9.2:1.

I switched from an Offy to a Clifford on the old motor in my '66. It lost .3 and 3 mph in the quarter. It lost all of it in the 1st 1/8th mile too.

Thanks for the reply. That's pretty interesting, I guess I'll stick to the Offy. I saw your post from two or three years ago where you posted the times. You thought there might have been something wrong with your manifold. Was there, or did it turn out fine? Thanks again for the info.
Just another question for you guys. I know Engle makes a 240 @.050 cam, but I'm thinking this may be a bit too big for a daily driver type of deal. Is there anything in between my Comp 264 and the Engle cam? Or would the gain not even be worth the trouble of changing it out? I'd also like to keep the Comp valve springs, and I'm not sure if the Engle would be too aggressive or not.

I just checked out Erson, and they have a cam with 230 duration at .050 and .465 lift. Would this be tame enough for a daily driver? And would it be worth the trouble of changing the cam?

That cam only has slightly more than a Comp 264. If your converter only stalls at 2200, you are better off with the comp. The Erson cam is probably a bit better matched to your motor buildup, but the converter will not let you use it to full advantage. I say save your money and time. Is the Comp degreed in?

Has anybody ever done a statistical comparison between Offy and Clifford? The question has been asked a bunch of times, but nobody gets a real answer. I guess Clifford's customer service sucks, and you can get an Offy intake through JC Whitney. Plus the Clifford units are poor quality, and not even completly machined when you get them.

Yes, the cam was degreed. I thought that might be the case with the converter. Thank you for the help.

I have not run the Clifford, but I did have an Offy on my first Demon. It was actually the first modification on the car. I replaced the stock one barrel with that and tuned a 600 Holley (an early Corvette carb, Holley # 0-2818). With that being the only change I took it back to Fremont Dragstrip. Dead stock the car had gone 18.76 at 73 in the 1/4 - which by the way was 2 seconds and 15 mph faster than a friends 250 straight 6 3 speed manual 74 Camaro. With just the Offy and the Holley change the car dropped to 17 flat (17.03 as I recall) at 80 mph. So, it picked up 1.5 seconds and 7 mph. This was with a 185K mile engine, stock automatic and 2.76 gears.

As far as cams go, the last Demon I had got the Mopar 268 solid lifter cam and it ran GREAT! Sounded like a strong 340 car at idle and had great throttle response. It worked fine with the stock converter in the rebuilt 904 and had 3.23 gears.

There's also the offy 2*1 that uses two Carter BBS'.

I've got it on my 63 Dart.

With my set up - it's a good daily driver and a strong runner with lots of mid range.

My set up is:

Offy 2*1 - two stock Carter BBS'
Clifford 6*2 headers (shorty street rod headers)
Two flowmaster 40s
Ported and polished head, shaved .100 - ported
.060 overbore
Custom cam - around 264 duration - probably about 460 lift.
Stock auto
3.55 rears
235/60-14 tires
Mopar Racing rear springs with KYB shocks

I just had a stoplight race against a BMW Z-3 and kept up with it just fine.

The only downside is that with those gears I can't cruise much faster than 60 to 65 (I like to keep it under 3k on the freeway).
