I've converted my 1963 225 to hydraulic lifters using Clifford's conversion kit.

It includes a 264 cam.

The head has been shaved .10.

Will I be OK using the stock pushrods (with the stock rocker arm and rockers), or should I order custom pushrods?

I've searched the board and there seems to be a difference of opinion.

i'm not sure there is any other way to do this without going the route the factory took by using a different valvetrain altogether. since there are no oil galleys feeding the lifters, the oil was supplied by the head via special pushrods and rockers. i've never seen this setup up close since i've never owned or played with a hydraulic cammed slant. seems like a step backward in terms of performance to me.
i checked clifford's site and saw no mention of a hydraulic conversion kit nor have i heard of this kit before now. perhaps they could offer some tech support directly to you.

There is no way to tell, without doing a trial fit. The first slant I did with .100 off the head, required shorter pushrods (solid cam). Other engines did or did not depending on manufacturing tolerances, and the head gasket used. I have never done a hydraulic cam.
My personal opinion says you will need shorter pushrods, due to the hydraulic rocker arm, having no provision for adjustment, and the lifter needs to have a certain amount of preload, without being bottomed out.

I haven't tried doing a conversion like that, but I have a few questions:

Why not just use stock solid lifter rockers with the stock pushrods, like on the T/A 340's? (Yes, I do know that they had different length pushrods than normal 340's)

Are the hyd pushrods that different in length?

Is the pushrod seat in the hyd lifter in a different place compared to the solid?

The two slants I've done both had .090 to .100 shaved and still used stock pushrods without a problem.

What does the Clifford kit involve? Guess I'll have to take a look at their catalog.

I didnt need custom push rods until I had .100" off head and .100" Off the block too.


I have .100" off a head on my volare with stock rods - no problems there.

The rocker assembly is non adjustable in the hydro setup, since there is no lash settings (build it and run it...)... so if he changes something he'll have to use an adjustable push rod to get the correct length then measure it and order a set if necessary... if the length is wrong he could have some fun with parts fun, bent push rod, or rocker stress...

The hydro pushrods are two ball ends, not a cup and ball...

Plus they are hollow, to supply oil to the lifters. If you use adj rockers and the pushrods that go with them, there is no provision to oil the lifters. Most likely the length will be incorrect, also.

Greg, If I'm not mistaken, you are running a solid lifter valve train, correct? You have a way of compensating for the milling (adjusters). The hyraulic setup does not. The push rod is supposed to preload the lifter, a certain amount. There is some leaway there, but not as much as with the solids.

Clifford's kit is not in their catalog. When I ordered the cam, they offered the kit which included the cam, the hydraulic lifters and a set of pushrods. Their pushrods did not have the hole down the center, so I intend to use the factory pushrods.

Installing the lifters required removal of the head.

I was advised to use only the hydraulic rockers and pushrods because it's all designed to get oil to the lifters since no other modification was made to the engine to provide oil to the lifters.

I don't know whether the hydraulic pushrods are actually different in length from the solid, but there's no question the head's had .10 milled off it. the Clifford pushrods and factory hydraulic pushrods are the same length.

I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Who should I order the custom pushrods from?
