I've checked both B&M and Transgo but they both only show kits back to a '66. I have a '62 A904 that I will be transplanting into the Valiant this spring... is there a shift kit for this unit? I've looked through the archives too but haven't found anything specific.

pre 66 had a rear pump. so, i don't know if that changes the situation enuff that the shift kits won't work. looking at my 65 i don't see why the "poor-man's" shift kit wouldn't work:

turn up line pressure on the valve body and block the accumulator with a 2 7/8" rod (i have used a 7/16" bolt for this).

i would not do this mod unless i was RACING. it will make for solid, tire chirping upshifts.

No racing; I want quick, firm, but not harsh upshifts and minimum slippage.

you may be able to accomplish what you are looking for by just turning up the line pressure a little on the valve body. The screw you are looking for is next to the shifter spool.

if your bands are correctly adjusted and the kickdown is right, the torqueflights are pretty good about not slipping.

Get with Pat "Torqueflite Patty" Blais ( tflitepatty@verizon.net ), an excellent specialist in early Torqueflites.

Ah... I've seen that name before. Thanks, I'll contact him when I'm ready to move forward. The engine is first, I hope to start on it early next month.

TCI's go back to 1962.

You can either goto summit or TCI to take a look at the instruction sheet
