i feel like a dummy, how do you get the back seat out and take out the back seat belts?

You don't say which car you have but most A bodies have a hook welded to the floor. You have to push down and back about midway between the transmission hump and end of the seat on each side. Once the hook is cleared the seat bottom will lift up and out.

I usually describe it as a rotary motion.....down-in-and up. That will allow a "hoop" bent into the underseat framing to disengage from the hook welded onto the rear floor area. Yes, there is typically one on each side, roughly centered between the driveshaft hump and inboard rocker panel.

The bottom comes out like the previous post says...sometimes it can be stubborn (but you might find your build sheet under there...)...

The top may be a bolt in (check the X-braces in the trunk area), some models have a lift up rear seat top...I think '72 valiant is a bolt in...

It takes a very hard push with a firm down and back motion. I just looked at the Lancer I'm stripping for parts and saw that the seat anchors are 12 inches in from the center of the hump which is a little less than half way to the side panel. You'll have the best luck exerting pressure as close as possible to the actual anchor point. You have to get the hoop on the seat to duck under the hook of the seat anchor so I can't emphasize too much to keep the front edge of the seat cushion on the floor as you push back. It takes some huffing and puffing, especially if the seats haven't been out in a while.

A trick I've used is to use a rubber mallet (if saving the seat material) or a BFH and whack the lower seat frame (in the middle of each sitting area) -- this will loosen it up-- & then you can push & lift & it will come out

once you get it out you'll understand the apparatus that holds the seat in place-- it will come out

I put the front seat as far forward as it will go, prop my foot against the back of it and use my knee to push down and back. That gives you good control in both directions. Unfortunately, some cars don't have enough room to easily get your leg in that position.

Here's a picture of the clip you are fighting from a 1974 Duster floor pan...

You noice you need to push it all the way back...without throwing your back out pull up, and let it spring back while riding the upped 'tang' so it pops out...installation is easier and a reverse of the above...

I used a hydraulic jack (with wood blocks to protect the seats) to push the bottom in.

Arranged so one end was at bottom of front seat, the other at bottom of rear

after getting it all apart, i think maybe the intended way is to just pull up the back of the seat where it is wedged under the backrest. the way i finally got mine out was to place a 1/2" open end wrench inbetween the two "teeth" on the horizontal section of the seat bracket, i then lifted up on the seat and gave the other end of the wrench a good tap with a rubber mallet, popped right out, thanks for all the replies
