hey everyone, do any of you know how to modify a 1bbl kickdown linkage to work on a 2bbl carter? i've heard people say that it can be done, but never seen how. thanks for your help.

It cannot be done if you're using the factory 2bbl intake manifold, because the throttle shaft axis is 90° from where it is with the 1bbl. No way!

It can be done if you're custom-mounting a 2bbl on a custom-modified intake manifold, such that the 2bbl carb's throttle shaft runs front to back like the 1bbl does.

can any of the parts from the one barrel linkage be used on the 2bbl?

No.

I personally have the 1 bbl kickdown on my car that it equipped with the super six intake and carter bbd.

You still need the linkage that hooks to the carb but the kickdown can be used. I have been telling people this since I did the super six conversion about 2 years ago. So, it will work despite the lingering rumor that it will not.

"Trust but verify":

Let's see some good, clear photos. There is no way the 1bbl kickdown can be hooked to the 2bbl throttle linkage and bracket without serious modification. I don't know what you did, but you didn't just bolt your 1bbl kickdown rod onto the 2bbl bracket. And before this left eyebrow of mine will drop back down to its normal height, we'd need to talk in detail about the behaviour of your automatic transmission as regards shift points—the geometry of the throttle linkage on the 2bbl is very different from on the 1bbl, which necessitates different kickdown geometry, which means even if you find a way to hook the 1bbl rod to the 2bbl bracket, the trans isn't going to upshift and downshift at the correct points.

Well, it could be done this way: http://web.umr.edu/~cts7w6/kickdown_linkage.jpg

It worked, but needed some refinement beyond what is pictured. I abondoned the whole project for other reasons and went back to the 1 barrel setup. (I thought my 2300 was borked to the point of being unusable... turned out be an intermittently bad ignition switch. ) Also, try to get a teflon lined cable housing... the one I had was unlined and occaisonally bound a bit.

I rigged the setup pictured above up over the summer when I had access to all the air, power, and hand tools I could dream of. On the new engine I'm building I ordered a Lokar kit because I don't want to spend time piddling with re-designing a linkage like this when I'm restricted to what can be done in a dorm room and having the truck parked in the middle of a parkign lot. (I miss my electrical outlet, vise, and impact wrench ) Well, and it's 30 degrees out... piddling in the cold isn't that fun either.

I'll have to try and get those pictures for ya'll to see what I did. Haven't been looking at my car much since it's been wrecked but it will be getting fixed soon.

As for the shift points, a trans shop that rebuilt my trans set it up after the rebuild and it shifted just fine. It also shifted correctly before the rebuild.

Are there any pictures that disprove that a 1 bbl kickdown rod would work with a 2 bbl?

Terrific, looking forward to 'em.

I'm sure you know what the correct shift points are, but I've encountered a lot of people blissfully unaware that their transmission's behaviour was seriously screwed up. "Huh? It's fine!"

Heh, good one.

Why the eek? I was actually kind of proud of it. The mount for the kickdown cable needed a little modification to keep it from slipping on the carb end, but that would have been an easy matter to fix, and I had all of $7 invested in it. I didn't see any underlying safety issues or anything like that...

In the interest of not starting a fight, I'm just gonna leave the Eek to speak for itself.

Lol, ok, point taken. You must have noticed I was running a 2300...

This is my converted 1bbl to 2 bbl setup. I HAD to make something to work with the header, no stock linkage would clear and no sense cutting up a good 2bbl piece to do it IMO. Sorry, i thought this pic was a little clearer. My linkage is just one rod that goes from the carb to the kickdown lever. It was cut in 2 and had another piece welded in to clear the header.
