Post subject: | How many pass. car Oil Pans? |
I was just wondering, how many different /6 passenger car oil pans are there, and what's interchangable? I remember reading that the '63-66 A-cars use a different pan & pick-up than the '67-76 cars. How many different pans are there among the A, B/E, C, F/J/M and R bodies? I know this has prolly been addressed before, but searching "oil pan" brings up a gazillion (well, 623) posts. Thanks! |

The big difference which I have experienced. those 67-76 a bodies have the deep part of the pan farther to the front than the F/J/M bodies due to the changes to the torsion bar suspension. The 67-76 dart style pan will NOT fit into and F/J/M body.(I've tried) But, that means that the F/J/M pan can fit most earlier car applications since the low spot starts farther back than any model I have seen. I believe it is important to keep the pan matched to the pickup tube, so keep them as a set. It also appears that the earlier 63-66 motors where positioned farther forward than the later 'A' body motors. That means that the early pans are very likely to fit the later 'A' bodies, but I don't know if they will fit the F/J/M bodies. I don't expect that the 63-66 pan would fit F/J/M. Also, 'A' bodies did not cross exhaust under the oil pan, so the only clearance issue is in the front, While a factory 'F' body crosses under the pan and requires another aspect of clearance. Best to stick with their own kind on the F/J/M models. I never owned or worked on B/E cars, so I can't help there. Truck pans are too deep for any of the cars as a general rule and car pans won't work on trucks due to even greater clearance requirements up front. |

Post subject: | Clearance at the center link can also be an issue |
I attempted to put a 74 oil pan in my 61 Valiant (with a 65 kmember and suspension) The rear of the 74 pan sits on the center link. A 63 pan has about 3/4 of an inch clearance. In this thread Doctor Dodge posted a picture with 6 oil pans. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... +pic#51749 |

The F/M/J pans can be made to work in an early A-body by using the V8 center link and denting the right front corner of the sump. |

I used an F-body oil pan in a 66 Cuda (v-8 center link) and didn't need to dent anything. |

Thanks, fellas. Looks like the best bet is to just transfer the original pan & pick-up from my 170 if I go for a 225 swap later. |
