What year did Chrysler begin using the rotary AC compressor and leave the R2 behind?

Do they all have an air pump for the idler pulley?

I've installed a Classic Air Perfect Fit system in my 63 Dart and it shipped with a mounting kit for the rotary compressor. The kit has a double pulley that mounts to the front of the harmonic balancer. The inner pulley is for the power steering and the outer one for the compressor.

This will push the fan closer to the radiator, which I'd like to avoid.

I'd rather use a factory bracket which uses a pulley on the back of the harmonic balancer, but the only ones I've seen lately use an air pump for the idler pulley.

What years and types of vehicles should I look for? Any advice is very much appreciated.

V2. The compressor you're thinking of was the V2 (there was a larger-displacement RV2 for Imperials and larger cars starting in the early '60s). The round compressor was first mounted on slant-6s in '78—first a Sanden SD compressor (excellent design), then a Chrysler/Nippondenso C171 (not such a great design).

All these compressors (V2, RV2, SD, C171) are "rotary" in that they are operated by turning. They are also all "reciprocal" in that they do their work by means of pistons that slide to and fro in cylinders.

No, cars without air pumps still got round compressors.

That'll be a mount kit for a standard Sankyo/Sanden/Seltec compressor.

Errrr...how's that? The fan should stay in its same place unless they've given you some kind of spacer and directed you to install it. And something's not making sense here. The factory setups are as follows: P/S uses the frontmost beltline (sheave bolted to the front of the crank pulley). The A/C uses the rearmost beltline (sheave bolted to the rear of the crank pulley, w/added rearmost sheave on fan/water pump pulley.

You say the aftermarket kit is using the rear beltline for the P/S...only way that's possible is if a new P/S bracket is supplied, which I don't recollect being the case.

You'd have to find a car with an aspirator air injection system rather than an air pump. OR use the older York/Tecumseh compressor mount with the common adaptor plate to take the round Sanden/etc. compressor. Or just use the Chrysler V2 compressor.

Thanks, Dan, for the reply.

I guess I didn't make myself clear.

On my current system, the fan, water pump and alternator are driven off the harmonic balancer. The V2 ac compressor is driven off a pulley attached to the engine side of the harmonic balancer. The power steering is driven off a pulley attached to the radiator side of the harmonic balancer.

The kit from Classic Air comes with a replacement for the power steering pulley. It's a double pulley, with the outer most pulley to drive the Sankyo/Sanden/Seltec compressor.

It comes with a fan spacer that moves the fan closer to the radiator so it will clear the double pulley.

I'd like to avoid that and find a mounting bracket for the compressor that would allow me to keep my original pulley arrangement.

I could use the V2 compressor, but the problem I've always had with it is that the belt stretched in no time at all and then all you hear is "belt-slap" from the engine compartment. I know that Chrysler changed the design in the post-63 models, presumably to eliminate that problem, but I'd have to track down one of these too.

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Yep, check! That's how they put them together. Er...what's the matter with keeping this setup?

Sounds mickey-mouse to me. Why use this?

Belt slap is eliminated by the use of proper belt tension (REALLY TIGHT) and correct A/C clutch for the application. The 6-cylinder clutches are larger than the V8 items; using a V8 clutch with the slant-6 belt arrangement will generally aggravate belt noise issues. New inertia-ring style slant-6 A/C compressor clutch assemblies go by pretty often on eBay.

H'mm...nope! V2 compressor and bracketry is identical for the Mopar aftermarket (under-dash) A/C on 6-cylinder models from '62 through at least '66.

If you're bound 'n' determined to use the round compressor for some reason, I'd avoid using Classic's bracketry, which really sounds like a poorly thought-out setup...like they never really looked at more than one car, which happened to be a '79 Volare or something with a great big engine compartment, and just assumed all slant-6 fitments would be the same. Instead, I'd pick up either a factory round-compressor bracket setup, or an aftermarket York/Tecumseh bracket kit plus a round-compressor adaptor plate, OR put in a call to the folks at www.ackits.com and ask about their Seltec bracket kit for a 225 slant-6; ask them specific questions about belt lines and such.
