Is the 4 speed tranny better than the 3 speed?

I know that's pretty general but I am thinking of swaping out my 3 speed auto and putting a 4 speed auto from an Aspen ?

Any info would be helpfull?

I'm assuming a 4 speed will be better on gas as it has that extra gear

is that so?

Will I loose any performance by switiching to a 4 speed?

are there any compaitbility issues with a 4 speed ?

are they easy to find or hard to find?

good idea or bad idea?

Anyone done this swap allready?

It coould be going into a 67 Dart with super six set up.

Post subject:  That's a new one...

I know the Aspen had the 4 speed/ "3spd_overdrive" manual gear box...was not aware of a 4 speed auto...

lot of work, lots of learning and fun...would get more mileage if geared right...

There was no 4speed AUTO in the aspen. The early 4speed autos that mopar put out came in trucks only. The a500 (904based) and the a518 (727based) and those came out in the later 80's/early 90's. You would have to:
A: get a adapter plate to bolt a slantsix to a trany that was made for SB v8
B: Do tons of hacking to the the cross memeber/floors to make the bigger trany fit
and
C: come up with a controler for the OD or have to manualy flip a switch on and off for OD

If your looking for milage a easyer (and more fun to drive) swap would be to put in a 4speed MANUAL that has OD. THOSE came out in the aspens. They are called a833 OD tranys.
You have to snag the trany, shifter+linkage, cluch linkage, brake/clutch peddle setup, and a manual trany crossmember. As well as put in a 4speed "hump" on the floor. You could get most of the stuff from an aspen or another Abody.
