Post subject:  Race Block and Head Choice - Which Years?

I am going looking for a 225 Slant Six block and head to build an all out race engine. Is there a block or head that are the best choice? I am looking for a year model car and model the block or head would be in and the casting numbers to look for. How much could I expect to pay and are they readily available in the junkyard. Help! I am ready to get started right away.

The newer heads without the drool tubes are cast with more material around the ports. This means they can be opened up, or ported, further.

Post subject:  It's a 'mix and match'

You want a 1968-1974 head if you need plug variety, or a 1975-1980 head if you have the need to 'hog' the thing out...
You will want a pre-1976 block if going forged crank (or need it for a 198 long rod mill)...you can still use a 1976+ cast crank mill for standard overbored buildups, check out the articles posted and you'll have to make some 'guesses and choices' on how you want to build it.

slightly off topic, but has anyone actually had a cast crank fail? not just a bearing, but an actual crank?

given the choice I realize forged is the way to go, its what I have myself, I was just curious if someone has actually had one fail, in either daily driven or race application. I'm sure it probably has happened, I just haven't heard of it.
