I owned an Alabama converter once. It was so far out of balance that it would literally shake your teeth around 2000 rpm.

This has nothing to do with the brand, it pertains to any converter. That is an 11 Inch converter, and they are rating it for a V-8. It will not stall anywhere near that high behind a slant six. The are several companies, that make convertors for the slant, that have been mentioned on this site. Edge Racing convertors, Midwest, and PTC are three. I have an Edge in one of my cars and am happy with it. Customer service was great. You should call and talk to them. Remember that stall speed is directly related to the torque output of the engine: The same converter that stalls at 3000 rpm with a 360 may only stall to 1600 rpm in a 225, BUT it may also stall at 4500 behind a 440. Always talk to the manufacturer about what you are going to use it for, and if you smell a bunch of BS from the other end of the phone, be smart and call another manufacturer. I tried to warn my friend Miles about that but he didn't listen. The converter be ended up with was advertised as a 3000 stall converter, but it went to 4200 before the blower went on his 440. After the blower, well lets just say that when you stabbed the gas, the tach went right to 7200 rpm and stayed there for the entire 1/4 mile! The trans was already manual valve body, but even when you'd shift, the tach just stayed right at 7200. And that was an 8:1 440 with a 6% underdriven 6-71 and a Crane .494 235 @ .050 cam - certainly not anything you'd expect to make peak torque at 7200 rpm! Marc www.marcmedina.com |

My instinct is that if you don't know enough about the product AND vendor to buy with absolute confidence then E-Bay is probably not the best place to go looking. "There's no free lunch" and a lower price has to be paid for somewhere by sombody, usually it's in either substandard product quality or spotty customer service or both and it's the end consumer that usually ends up bearing the brunt of the cost. |
